A case for the defence - Major overhaul?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

My defence would be:-

                  Reina

Johnson    Kelly     Cahill    Baines
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Ola Mr Benitez wrote:I would take Cahill every day of the week. I think he looks really solid, big and strong.  The perfect replacement for Carra.  I think we need to pay whatever is needed to get him this summer and hopefully play him next to Agger (when fit) and Carra if Agger is not fit.

I really rate Cahill. Infact I'd have him starting for England. Ferdinand is finished due to injury and imo Cahill is better than Dawson and Jagielka. Bolton know they can't hold onto him and so will be looking for £15-20m. Arsenal and Spurs will both be in for him aswell imo.

Agger is clearly our best centre back but I'd still keep hold of him because of how good he is when fit. He's averaging something like 26 games a season since signing for us but this season has been more frustrating than most because he's been in and out more than even he would have expected and you also have the fact that Hodgson wanted to sell him which was ridiculous.

Skrtel and Carragher have their good and bad days in equal measure but neither are good enough to be regular starters imo. The Greek has earned his new one year contract but even he has started making more ridiculous errors than normal recently.

Having sadi all that I think we may need 2 new centre halves. :D

I'm not convinced by the defesnive side of Luiz's game tbh. He still looks a bit heavy in the tackle, giving away fouls needlessly by going in a bit hastily (sp). Time will tell if he can stop that part of his game but going forward he looks a crackin player. In fact since Chelsea are stuffed for a player with an eye for a pass I'd stick Luiz behind Torres and see what happens and I'm being serious when I say that

Decisions need to be made. Agger's never been the same since the metatarsal injury in 07-08. Skyrtel makes errors Carragher gives 100% every game but has lost a bit of pace the Greek isn't top quality and makes errors two crucial penalties given away in games lately. I'd bring in two top quality defenders let Skyrtel leave and have Carragher and Agger in reserve with Wilson. The defence needs reshaping completely. Apart from Kelly and Johnson I don't know who should start every week.

Could honestly do worse than Madjid Bougherra. Plays for Rangers and likes to bomb forwards... 28 now but could get on the cheap

Yeah, I'm not saying hes the answer, but a decent squad player and solid enough. He's too good for scottish football anyways

I'd like Gary Cahill, dunno about the price tag like, he's 25 so there's a good 7 years in him at least

you know I'd try Kelly at centre back for however many games he can get til the end of the season and see how he goes. Might just solve the problem with that I reckon. Just one of many options mind. We still need to invest in a left back - we've been crying for one since Riise

We're absolutely spoilt at right back now if last night was anything to go by - in fact our defence will be pretty flexible in terms of positions if injuries were to hit us hard

thought flanagan was excellent for a kid making his debut. weird how in recent years the academy has produced more right backs than any other position. be interesting to see if he retains his place for arsenal on sunday or whether carra reverts to right back.

on a similar theme, aurelio is just utter class when he's fit as he showed last night. he's also an unbelievable crosser of the ball. one ball he put in in the first half was world class but there was nobody attacking it. if only he could stay fit. personally i can't believe he completed the 90 last night considering he's been out for so long.

the centre backs had cigars out as city were so poor so it was hard to judge how they really performed last night. sunday will be a bigger test against arsenal's superior movement off the ball.
