Australia v greece

International Football/Football World Wide - General Discussion

Australia has beaten European Champions Greece, 1-0 in a pre world cup friendly in Melbourne tonight, in front of a crowd of 98,000 at Melbourne's MCG (same ground at which the recent Commonwealth Games were held).

Australia's goal came in the 15 minute from Wigan's Josip Skoko in a well judged and clinical 20 metre volley.

In all honesty, Australia could have increased the scoreline by another two or three given an ounce of luck but it was a dominant performance by the Aussie lads. The win was all the more significant as Australia was without Kewell, Cahill & Aloisi.

The next match is against Holland on 4th June.

Greece were average, but fair play to Australia they got the job done without Kewell, Cahill and Aloisi.

If there was one question mark over this win it has to be keeper 'Spider' Kalac. He was awful...looked nervious, tentative, unsure and anything but positive. Granted he only touched the ball half a dozen times but if he'd played better he might have got a few more. His first attempt in getting hand to ball was just plain laughable (basic plan for keeper - unless you know 100% that you can get to the ball, don't come out.)

Not a hard decision for Guus on who will start in Germany.

Defo, Schwarzer is better than Kalac in every area of the game. The only think Kalac has over him is height.

I was rather surprised by that decision considering all the pre match , this isnt really about experimentation more settling the line up and tactics

Does anyone know anything of the Aussie third choice keeper Ante Covic?? He plays for Hammarby but I know little to nothing obout him.

I thought Brad Jones (Schwarzer's understudy at Middlesborough) might have been the No. 3 keeper. Not to be apparently.

Typical friendly  :glare: Greece didnt turn up, and there was no real test for the Aussies. Holland will be a different case.

Its funny to see the optimism over here, most Aussie's see there team getting through to the last sixteen now due to that win over " the European champions"
