it took shankly 2 seasons to get us out of the second division and the only reason we got promoted was that shankly (with the help of eric sawyer) convinced the board that they had to spend big if they wanted success.
we splashed out big money on ian st john and ron yeats and the club never looked back.

re rodgers, he is very a good coach, some of the stuff we played last season was the best footy i`ve seen out of a liverpool side since kennys first spell.
i`m sure brendan would rather be signing big name players himself but he`s obviously working under a lot of constraints. whoever we bring in is going to be working under the same tight budget etc so we may as well have an expansive manager in charge than a negative one.
dont get me wrong i`m as pI$$ed off as anyone about our transfer targets (no way are we acting like a club making a genuine effort to get into the top 4) but thats not solely down to rodgers, we have a committee with about 10 fella`s on it who oversee our transfers.
i think after the way we finished last season we had a great opportunity to put together a really good side this summer but we have totally f##ked it up, instead of signing players that would strengthen the starting XI we have faffed around signing squad fodder.
btw to compare rodgers to a manager that got us to 2 CL finals in 3 seasons beating the likes of barcelona, real madrid, chelsea, juventus, AC milan, inter milan, arsenal, marseilles etc etc along the way is ludicrous.

Yes, we got promoted on the third attempt. Going by some Rodgers should be out the door now after his first season - that was my point.

Rodgers has stated that he now wants to improve the first team with a couple of signings after beefing up the squad - don't be so quick to rule this down as a poor summer - just yet.

I think Redno7 compared Rafa's last season to Rodgers first.

Regarding your bold part - I agree 100%.

People have to justify ( to themselves ) their demands for previous managers to be sacked - hence why there is the scratching around looking to compare the three of them to ensure that BR is made to be untouchable. He should be far from it - we are a club with high standards of competing - if BR doesn't reach those standards ( didnt last year ) then the question of him being our manager will need to be asked. For all the constraints he could be under BR has still managed to spend around £80mil since he arrived - it's not small change.

imo if rodgers buys a couple of `first team` type players then suarez is on his way.

I haven't read anywhere on here by anyone that Rodgers is untouchable, a strawman argument you've built up to feel right about something when dismantling it.

As for people justifying themselves, well, it's interesting to see you're now starting to read peoples minds, after all you " (I) know what Rodgers thinks"

I'm wondering now, with the eye on buying attack minded players and being linked with more, Rodgers knew this a while back.

Sell to buy then or going to keep buying attackers and ignore our obvious frailties

If Rodgers cannot find a centre back better than Coates or Skrtel, a holding midfielder better than Lucas, or a
winger superior to Downing then its a very poor showing.

Honestly, it is not difficult to upgrade these positions and there is massive choice of players out there for
a club like Liverpool, not the cream of the crop, but top footballers better than what we have.

I don't think its rock hard identifying players better players, in fact its easy, but the trouble we have is getting
a deal done as this is where we seem to hit a world of problems at Liverpool.

Well one of those players that could have arrived to improve us is Wanyama but he has gone to Southampton !.

I agree with Wanyama. Talk of De Jong and I would take him like.Dunno, we just can't seem to clinch the big deals. This greek centre half, the armenian now at dortmund. We always find a reason not to do the deal to me.We must get at least 3 class acts into that first 11, and men not boys from Barcelona B.

Nigel De Jong ? Good player but would the owners want to pay those high wages and doesn't seem a BR player.

I don't think we will get a DM - think he will have Lucas and Allen cover the role

Was hoping Nigel as rate him but prob this youngster from Ajax I see now, another De Jong. Lucas or Allen holding will be a prob for us in my opinion but agree that Rodgers is unlikely to buy a replacement there.

well one thing is for sure,  BR has said two players of starting 11 quality to come in.  no mention of selling Suarez so we have to assume he's not leaving.  wonder who he has in mind

It will be a problem - they both lack the dominating physical presence that will stop us being bullied

Im not really clued up on this because Im really only ever interested in LFC, but could someone tell me a manager who has come to a club which was on its knees and which finished 8th in the PL, and in his first season got them in the top 4 without spending mega bucks?
Thanks
:)
