Aguero closes on Reds switch - Atletico Madrid striker heading to Liverpool for medical - 4th January 2009

Atletico Madrid have confirmed Sergio Aguero is close to finalising a surprise move to Liverpool.

Aguero has emerged as a target for Liverpool, and rivals Manchester City, in recent weeks as he looks to secure a big money move to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old had been keen to join Liverpool ahead of Man City, but had been set a deadline to complete his switch to Anfield.

On Friday, Atletico gave Aguero 72 hours to resolve his future and he is now on the brink of linking up with Rafa Benitez's squad.

A statement on Atletico 's official website confirmed Aguero has travelled to Merseyside to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms.

No details of the fee have been disclosed, but reports have put the figure in the £25million region.

Aguero is expected to partner Fernando Torres upfront against Stoke City on the weekend and also put a question mark over the long term future of Robbie Keane.

Former Independiente youngster Aguero, who Rafa Benitez turned down the opportunity to buy prior to his move to Atletico, has scored 35 goals in 90 appearances for Atletico.

Oh how I wish that was true. :D

Can you name me some CBs who are better at going forward than Agger Bob?

Puyol is twice the player Agger is and carries the ball better than Agger does.

Just in England, I'd rate Carvalho, Ferdinand and Gallas as just as good or better going forward than Agger.  Don't get me wrong, I like the lad a lot and think he offers quite a bit when he steps out from the back with the ball at his feet but the most technically gifted CB in the world?  That's well over the top, IMO.  :)

Gallas is a loon and liability, you must be aware this, Carvalho only gets forward at corners ??? I fact I cant understand some one who mods this forum yet praises Ronaldo but lays into say Agger wtf is going on? how many games you been?

Well everyone has their own opinion, but I think that theres no one in the world that can touch him in that area.  Carvalho and Puyol are not far off, but Ferdinand and Gallas are not even close anymore.

 So suggesting that Agger might not be the best CB in world football going forward is "laying into him" is it?  I hardly think so but, then again, I'm just some no mark Canadian aren't I?  Get a grip.  :O
