Villa fans jeer unsettled Barry

Aston Villa supporters turned on unsettled Gareth Barry during the friendly victory at Walsall.

Barry was disciplined for criticising manager Martin O'Neill after the 27-year-old revealed he wanted to quit Villa and join Liverpool.

But the proposed move has stalled amid ill-feeling as Liverpool have failed to meet Villa's £18m asking price.

Barry has returned to training but was a target for Villa fans as he played for an hour in their 3-2 victory.

Walsall took the lead through Alex Nicholls in the 42nd minute, but Shaun Maloney equalised with a 62nd-minute free-kick.  606: DEBATE

Trialist Patrick Suffo, the former Sheffield United striker, made it 2-1 to the home side with a low drive.

Maloney levelled again from close range with 10 minutes remaining before Wayne Routledge volleyed home the winner four minutes from time.

How is it disgraceful.  Villa are not saying he cannot go, they are well in there right to ask for the fee they want.  Barry should of kept his mouth shut and not said badmouthed the manager.  Robbie Keane wants to come to us but he will demand spurs sell him to the whole world.  Barry should of handed in his transfer request and then waited.  Barry's best football for villa has been under MON so to say MON has been disgraceful is harsh.  Villa dont owe us anything.

He has been loyal and Aston Villa's best player in the last 5 years, even before MON, just because he made it into the england team people started to watch him more. What did MON do when barry was linked with us after the season finished? he was a pundit for BBC during the euros rather than devoting his time persuading Barry to stay or working hard to do so. Today I read he threw him in the reserves to play with reserve players in a friendly game. I think its utter disgrace throwing a captain of a club who has bled for his team kept his mouth shut all over these years until now (:D) kept a sense of proffessionalism to throw him in the reserve like that just because he wants to leave!

Yes Barry should have handed a transfer request, shouldn't have done the interview, but he was bloody frustrated at the fact MON did nothing to persuade him.

I've been surfing through Villa forums on the net, and most fans believe that MON has done nothing to persuade Barry to stay.

Y´know we´re all happy thinking its Rafa calling the shots over Barry but truth be known, it fits Hicks psyco profile far better than Rafas.  Kinda changes things a bit when you consider Hicks is sending out the message theres no extra cash, maybe MON should go knock on his door and receive the good word in his shell-like, direct.

It's amazing how overpriced English players are.  How can Barry be worth 18 million, when Hleb who is is a much better footballer, was sold for 12 million.  O'neill is one crazy :censored:!

Yes but remember he'll be doing as his agents tell him and if he were to put in a transfer request the agents cut almost vanishes, same with Ronaldo, Keane, Berbatov etc.

I badly want to see the headline "Barry says O'NEILL can leave"

Their fans booing him is a good sign for us, that will make it difficult for him to stay and now villa should be looking to get a deal agreed. Offer £10m, I bet we can do to him what Del did to Trigger over a consignment of dodgy briefcases

He claimed early in the proceedings, that he didn't want to screw villa over and do them out of any fee. Maybe that was a cover up for not wanting to lose money coming his way, but it could be true. It can't be easy leaving a club you've been at as long as he has, just imagine who Fowler felt and that was less years. Fowler was lucky enough to play for a big club as opposed to villa

O'Neill wants Barry solution14:31, July 24, 2008
Currently 0/512345Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has told suitors Liverpool he wants the Gareth Barry transfer impasse to end "one way or another".

Want-away England midfielder Barry has been left in limbo after Liverpool failed to improve on their last offer - believed to be in the region of £15million - and was made to run the gauntlet when he was met by over 3,500 angry Villa fans at Walsall on Tuesday.

"We haven't heard back from Liverpool for some time and we're not exactly sure where we all stand," O'Neill revealed to his official club website.

"When people say people are in limbo, I don't think that applies to anybody more than ourselves. We don't know whether to move forward or not with it.

"It's a long-running saga and I wouldn't mind it ending one way or another."

O'Neill says he is in the dark over Liverpool's intentions but would have no objection to Barry staying at Villa Park - and would have no qualms about playing him in Saturday's Intertoto Cup clash with Odense.

"My preference - and hopefully I'm speaking for a lot of Villa fans, if not all of them - is that we would like Gareth to stay at the football club," he added. "That would be great because it will be hard to replace him.

"But we're not sure where Liverpool stand now. It was never mentioned before about them needing to sell some players before they bought - that was never in the system at all. But seemingly it must be part of it."

I think O'Neill is starting to get worried now  :D

I don't think he is mate, the general consensus on here seems to be 'let Villa sweat and eventually they will have to lower their price for the player and the deal will be done'. Can't see that happening myself. It seems pretty clear they are not going to budge an inch and if we don't come up with the cash it will be down to Arsenal to make a move or they will keep the player which is what O'neil would have preferred in the long run. It would be easier if we just dropped out of the running now as it seems the whole deal is entirely dependent on Alonso leaving and that seems very unlikely now.
