Reception? He won't kick another ball for us.

Wouldn't be too sure, I've heard he's only suspended until Monday and I'm not sure in Rafa's predicament he can afford to be freezing out 1st team players.

RIERA (PREMIERSHIP)

09/10 : 0 goals in 12 appearances (3 apps as sub, 8x unused sub)
08/09 : 3 goals in 28 appearances (4 apps as sub, unused sub stat not available)

He's scored a disappointing five goals in a Liverpool shirt, three of those covered by a five game spell between 09/12/08 and 03/01/09 - scoring in three of those five games, against PSV, Bolton and PNE.

We'd be lucky to get £8m for him, with the current circumstances meaning we'd be looking to sell and with us paying arguably a little more than he was worth when we paid £8m for him ourselves. Reckon we might get as much as £5m, unless Citeh are interested in which case we might get £20m! Doubt many big clubs would be interested, those that aren't big clubs won't be willing to pay £8m for him. I don't know what we got for Diouf, but I'm guessing without being the same class of count that the kind of bids and figures involved would be the same ie nowhere near the price paid

sorry but can't I see Babel on the pitch at the moment, didn't he have a winge at Rafa earlier in the season.
Football is so weird in terms of employment, clubs "own" the players and control what they can say and when so denying them freedom of speech. It really is weird that it is allowed by the EU in terms of human rights and yes I know they are paid a fortune but it is kind of weird all the same.

The only thing wierd are your posts. Any company empolyee that goes to the media and complains about their boss will get disciplined by that company no matter what industry they are in.

Tony Barratt said this "It is not the first time that the pair have been at loggerheads, nor is it the first time that Riera has been fined for his behaviour.

This season he was reprimanded after a training-ground altercation with a promising reserve-team player in which Riera reacted violently to the teenager. The incident incensed Benítez and convinced him that he would have no choice but to sell the Majorca-born winger at the end of this campaign.

His departure date is now likely to have been brought forward and will be confirmed if either of the Moscow clubs are willing to match Liverpool’s £8 million valuation of a player who, until of late, has been a regular in the Spain squad."

there have been a few puch ups of late at our club, the last big bust up was only a few weeks ago, SG stood up to Rafa and had to be taken our of the room by Sammy Lee.

Liverpool winger Albert Riera has attempted to play down comments made in the Spanish media in which he heavily criticised Reds manager Rafael Benitez.

The Spain international has been disciplined by Benitez and told not to return to the club's Melwood training ground until Monday after claiming in a radio interview in his homeland that Liverpool was a "sinking ship".

Riera, who has been largely frozen out of the Liverpool first team this season, also insisted Benitez's dialogue with his players is "practically nil".

Benitez was believed to be angered by the timing of the interview, which was broadcast on the eve of Thursday night's Europa League tie with Lille, which the Merseysiders won 3-0 on the night for a 3-1 aggregate win.

In his latest interview, Riera claimed he does not want to court controversy with his manager, but nevertheless reiterated his belief that Benitez has "something personal" against him.

"I do not want to make trouble with the manager," Riera told Spain's Cadena Ser radio station in quotes reported by the Daily Telegraph.

"I am not interested in making Rafa my enemy in the slightest, quite the opposite, but ultimately it is about playing, and if I am not, we have to talk about why not.

"We have not had any talk about why it is.

"I played all of last year, and sometimes if I did not play so well in one game, I would still play the next week. But this season I have not played at all.

"When that starts happening, you have to assume it is something personal, rather than professional.

"I believe in these situations it is better to talk about it and try to fix it, or at least make sure everyone knows where they stand. I have no problem talking to people."

He added: "I am delighted to play for Liverpool and if I was playing, I would love to stay, because it is a brilliant place to play football.

"But if I am not playing I have no chance of going to the World Cup, so I am trying to solve the problem so I at least have a small chance."

Benitez will be keen to draw a line under the matter on Monday, with a fine the very least Reira can expect, although the Reds boss was remaining tight-lipped over the controversy after the win over Lille.

"The timing was not the best for the team and we will deal with this internally," was all Benitez would say on the matter.

Well, yes actually, and rightly so as well.  You can't have players running to the press every time they're upset with being on the bench and letting them think that's the way to address the situation.  Rafa's done exactly the right thing suspending Riera.  With that said, it doesn't change my point from earlier: that this is the latest in a long line of frustrations expressed at the man management style of the manager and I think we definitely have a 'no smoke without a fire' situation on this one.

Bob, i think you'll have to strike this one off that "long list" of players who fall out with rafa...  :D

the fella hits a teenager (funny how he didn't mention that in his radio interview) - rafa punishes him by freezing him out of the team and riera goes ballistic and obviously doesn't see that he's done anything wrong here.

Nothing to do with Rafa being supposedly cold or distant - he's just used that as an excuse

that wasn't a "punch up" though

unless the flacid attempts in nightclubs and the lack of bruises or black eyes on benitez (20 years and a hell of a lot less fitter than gerrard),  prove that our stevie needs to spend more time in the gym!

what were these punchups you're alluding to?

Assuming, of course, that Riera hitting Pacheco is actually true, then that is way out of line and discipline needs to be dished out.

Assuming it's true.

I'd find it difficult to buy into though, as he's never lost it on the pitch as far as I can remember. ???

One thing's for sure, when Riera does go, I hope the next manager we get in the Summer can get a decent attacking winger to replace him.

as far as we can "know" anything without being direct witness, yes

Sh!thouse trick hes pulled here, if he is the problem or Rafa why not just knock on Rafas door instead of running to Marca and knocking the club and the manager. The club is in enough trouble as it is, without sh!t like this.

He can go for all I care wont be missed.

See yer lar !!!

Really, do you know of any cases where that has happened? Does that employee get fined/docked wages, can the company transfer him to another company?

Seriously if you think about it, it is kind of like slavery with the football clubs owning and controlling the players. Very highly paid slaves but slaves all the same, in this day and age it is a bit weird in terms of human rights and political correctness etc.

Well I think that is his point actually, that it is in fact very hard to have a word with Rafa, not he first time a player has said that is it?
