You know what makes me laugh in all this about Riera though and wanting to play in the world cup. did this idiot really think he would of even have got a shout before if he wasnt playing for us, Its because Rafa brought him here in the first place that he got a shout for Spain, Never got a call when he was at City or Espanyol did he ,

Well, yes actually, and rightly so as well.  You can't have players running to the press every time they're upset with being on the bench and letting them think that's the way to address the situation.  Rafa's done exactly the right thing suspending Riera.  With that said, it doesn't change my point from earlier: that this is the latest in a long line of frustrations expressed at the man management style of the manager and I think we definitely have a 'no smoke without a fire' situation on this one.

Absolutely. Parchpea that's one weird post. What the f'uck would you do if you were Rafa - start him on the left for the next 2 matches and issue a public apology?? What was Reira doing? What did he expect to happen. Completely stupid thing to do, and right before 2 of our most important matches this season!

That said, I do agree with Bob, numerous players have made similar comments so Im quite sure theres something in it. I'm not sure why Rafa doesn't make more effort to interact with the players though. For me it's easy money, build up there confidence, let them know where they stand, get the whole team thinking the same; it's easy.

What Rafa needs to start doing is only signing people with thick skins who don't need to be babied and treat football like a profession.  Your not supposed to be best mates with your boss.

Whats crazy is that somehow we have underplayed multiple players at the same position.  Can't they look around and see all the other players in their position?  what do they expect?

Something that should help alleviate the situation a bit in the future will be the 25 man roster limits (with only 17 'internationals') starting next season, Rafa wont be able to keep multiple mediocre players and :censored: them both off, he will have to start choosing one or the other.

Here is what Hamann Thought

Dietmar Hamann Blasts Albert Riera For Attack On Liverpool Boss Rafael Benitez
Winger should blame himself, not his boss, insists former Red...

Liverpool winger Albert Riera has been urged to look at himself rather than blame Rafael Benitez by former Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann.

Riera blasted Benitez during a radio interview in Spain, claiming that the coach was aloof and bore a personal grudge against him which was to blame for his lack of first-team opportunities.

Hamann, who played 289 games for Liverpool and collected a Champions League winners' medal with them in 2005, feels that Riera's accusations are absurd, and it is down to players to make sure that they are in their manager's plans.

"I didn't read too much into the comments because he's a player who has not played too much football over the last six to eight months," the former Germany international told BBC Radio 5Live.

"He is clearly frustrated but you have to say since he signed for Liverpool (in September 2008) he has not done enough to really have an opinion on the manager.

"If Riera is not in the team it is probably because he is not doing enough in training or in games.

"You have players these days who complain about managers and I think these players should look at themselves.

"The first question you have to ask when you are not playing is 'have you done enough to be in the team?'

"These days it happens too often with players who can't get in the team, and the first thing they do is blame the manager."

"I can honestly say I have never had a problem with a manager in 15 years of my career and I would never blame a manager for not playing."

Riera went on to claim that Liverpool were a "sinking ship" with Benitez in charge after such a disappointing campaign.

Hamann refutes that notion, and believes that Riera may well have played his last game for the Reds this season.

"I think Liverpool are far from a sinking ship," he added.

"They are having a bad season by their standards but not all hope is lost and there are eight or 10 weeks ahead of them, so it is all to play for.

"It (Riera's outburst) is very disruptive, and I don't know whether he will play any further part in the rest of the season.

"If he didn't it would be understandable from the manager's point of view."

sorry but can't I see Babel on the pitch at the moment, didn't he have a winge at Rafa earlier in the season.
Football is so weird in terms of employment, clubs "own" the players and control what they can say and when so denying them freedom of speech. It really is weird that it is allowed by the EU in terms of human rights and yes I know they are paid a fortune but it is kind of weird all the same.

Riera is out of order and must want to leave the club
Saying that Rafa is the easiest of targets for this type of criticism as he is cold, distant and impersonal
Thats just the way he is

Might as well lock the official Albert Riera thread.  He's not going to be seen again in a Liverpool shirt.  Adios.

Papers such as the telegraph and the echo are now saying that Riera slapped Pacheco across the face in training a while ago which is why he's been frozen out for so long.

Tony Barratt said this "It is not the first time that the pair have been at loggerheads, nor is it the first time that Riera has been fined for his behaviour.

This season he was reprimanded after a training-ground altercation with a promising reserve-team player in which Riera reacted violently to the teenager. The incident incensed Benítez and convinced him that he would have no choice but to sell the Majorca-born winger at the end of this campaign.

His departure date is now likely to have been brought forward and will be confirmed if either of the Moscow clubs are willing to match Liverpool’s £8 million valuation of a player who, until of late, has been a regular in the Spain squad."

If what has been said about him and Pacheco then there's no defending him.  If he was stupid enough to think being frozen out had nothing to do with that incident and spoke out against Rafa regardless then there really is no way you can defend him.  Unfortunate, I really liked what he gave the team on the left side and once again we'll need a replacement with limited funds.
