I'm afraid it lacks any credibility, it is long since removed from being a strong competition when they expanded the Champions League to non-Champions and thus removed all the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best sides from the top leagues.

I doubt many would rank it ahead of the Champions League, Premiership and FA Cup in terms of prestige. It has Fulham and the bitters in it FFS, when did either of them last win a trophy?!?! (1995 if you need the answer)

Being the "next best european version of a cup" is arguable to say the least, there are only two European competitions EXCEPT I think winning the UEFA Super Cup is more prestigious given you'd have to beat the holder of either European competition to win that.

Given three out of the last four in last season's UEFA Cup were CL dropouts and therefore not one of the last sixteen in the major European competition, it is difficult to make a case that the second European competition is that strong. The Champions League ruined the UEFA Cup by expanding, the Cup Winners Cup was a better and more prestigious competition than the UEFA Cup has become, and dropping third placed teams in the CL group stages into the UEFA Cup has made it a joke. I'd be embarrassed by any LFC fans bragging about winning the Europa League under the circumstances, not that I am in any way convinced we will win it any more than we did in 02/03 when we lost to CELTIC.

If we beat Roma in the final of the Europa Cup and UTD loose to Barcelona in the final of the C/L and we both finish in the top 4 who will have more to smile about. Its not a difficult question, unless you are arrogant.

Are you telling me that winning the Europa league would be a bigger achievement than making the CL final ?

As far as im concerned, i'd take losing to Barcelona in the final of the CL every day of the week ahead of beating Roma in a Europa league final ....

Has nothing to do with being arrogant but if winning a trophy is all you care about then i guess you were absolutely fuming when we got knocked out of the carling cup ?

Its all about priorities. Given the position we find ourselves in, the league has to be our top priority to make sure we get a top4 spot ... Our squad is rather thing in terms of quality.. Advancing further in the CL and perhaps winning it would have been a gamble, but it would have been one that was worth taking... Im not sure the same can be said about the Europa league...

Wolfsburg as well, they got put out by the Mancs tonight. Michael Owen scored a hat-trick.

Juve, Roma, Wolfsburg, Atletico, Marseile... also Intrer or Rubin, but I'd like Inter to lose and go to Europa Cup... it will be less embarasing losing form them.

So as it stands we'll get one of:

Ajax, Valencia, Hamburg, Sporting Lisbon, Roma, Galatasaray, Salzburg, Fenerbache, Benfica, Shakhtar Donetsk, PSV, Werder Bremen, Juventus, Wolfsburg, Marseille, Unirea Urziceni.

And we'll play the first leg at Anfield, 2nd leg away.

So, we're into a 2-legged knockout round?  Are there any more group stages to come?  I haven't a clue how this tournament works.   :glare:

Valencia would be nice. At least Rafa might be motivated for that one.
