Assuming one of them goes? - Ideal replacements?

I think I have read that Johnson either isn't the best locker room guy or he gets drunk far too often for a proffesional athlete. can't remember which one or how reliable it was, plus I think he is coming off an injury.

Yeah, he'd be a popular signing with a lot on here by the looks of it and that includes me. I don't think they would sell though, and I don't think he'd come either as he's got a great relationship with the Everton fans. Although i'm not sure he'd come in and play Xabi's position as some seem to be suggesting, as far as i'm aware he's played out wide his whole career with the occasional game playing off the front man.

Balotelli was linked with a loan move to west ham during this tranfer peroid , i think we should take him up on loan could provide quality cover for torres , young , pacey and skillful has all the talent to be a top player , was really impressed with how he handled himself against the mancs . As for micahel johnson he was very very highly rated , but he seems to have put on loads and loads of weight , here's a pic of him now.

no matter what stage these youngsters are at scott they will always cost more than their foreign counter parts . Been that way for a long time unfortunately . There is always a risk when being a young up coming player about if he will make it or not . We cant afford to waste money on expensive english or even foreign lads who may or may not make it . Have to either get them very young or when they have shown they can make it . Harsh reality im afraid

anyway. elano's good, but definately plays further forward. i'd say they were a different kind of player

I know they are different ,its just with Benitez advocating he was going for all out attack ,surely if Alonso had stayed  his role would have been slightly altered to allow this to happen ...  Whether Xabi could have played more advanced is a whole other thread entirely ,anyway back on topic I opted for Elano because he is brimming with class and Ive no doubt he could adapt to a role not  dissimilar to Alonso's

Elano is a creative sort of player like xabi , he can pick out a pass , his vision in good although not in scholes/xavi or xabi's class . He's a decent goal scorer and a very good set peice taker , he surely out of favour at the eastlands and i'm sure we could get him on the cheap 5 million or so , or maybe on a season long loan like how everton did with Jo

But we've proved for the last ten years or so that we are :censored: at getting them very young with only Insua looking anywhere near the grade. Not an Owen, Fowler, Beckham or Messi in sight with the current crop either by the looks of things. And unfortunately we can no longer afford them once they have had their breakout season. Rafa (and whoever follows) is gonna have to get cuter and cleverer (is that a word?) with transfers in the future because unless we get some new owners with money to burn, we could be in a bit of trouble. Opportunities do arise in the transfer market but either we don't spot them or don't fancy them. Johnson is a good example, he could have been bought on the cheap (or certainly cheaper) had we moved for him earlier (ie. within the previous 12 months), the same applies to Robbie Keane, we bought him when he was at his absolute premium ie. signed up to a long-term deal and coming off the back of his best season. Someone like Micah Richards would be a good example, I'm not saying sign him (although i would love to see it) but take his situation, he was worth big big money 18 months ago, a real star, but now his stock and his reputation has fallen. This is the perfect time to go in for a player like this, BEFORE he comes back and has a stunning season, regains his England place and is suddenly worth £25 million again. We don't have to buy the form players all the time. Rafa was heavily linked with Kenwyn Jones a while back, of course it was when the player was in good form and scoring goals and his value seemed to soar (if you believe what you read). Well if Rafa really did like him then, I say go and sign the player now, when he's just had a dodgy season and Sunderland are paying big bucks for Peter Crouch. When you don't have a lot a lot money (at least not as much as your biggest rivals) then you are relying on producing big stars from the youth ranks (notice our two are getting a little long in the tooth and won't be around all that much longer) or you have to be a clever bugger in the transfer market (a'la Wenger).

Good point. Are you saying that we ought to use this as our philosophy from now on, or that we have already been using it  ???

Has anyone seen Ledesma play?

I remember a while back Marcotti saying something along the lines of, 'if Carrick's £18m this guy's easily £25m'.

Was he talking shite?
