As for micahel johnson he was very very highly rated , but he seems to have put on loads and loads of weight , here's a pic of him now.

anyway. elano's good, but definately plays further forward. i'd say they were a different kind of player

GYBS wrote:no matter what stage these youngsters are at scott they will always cost more than their foreign counter parts . Been that way for a long time unfortunately . There is always a risk when being a young up coming player about if he will make it or not . We cant afford to waste money on expensive english or even foreign lads who may or may not make it . Have to either get them very young or when they have shown they can make it . Harsh reality im afraid
at getting them very young with only Insua looking anywhere near the grade. Not an Owen, Fowler, Beckham or Messi in sight with the current crop either by the looks of things. And unfortunately we can no longer afford them once they have had their breakout season. Rafa (and whoever follows) is gonna have to get cuter and cleverer (is that a word?) with transfers in the future because unless we get some new owners with money to burn, we could be in a bit of trouble. Opportunities do arise in the transfer market but either we don't spot them or don't fancy them. Johnson is a good example, he could have been bought on the cheap (or certainly cheaper) had we moved for him earlier (ie. within the previous 12 months), the same applies to Robbie Keane, we bought him when he was at his absolute premium ie. signed up to a long-term deal and coming off the back of his best season. Someone like Micah Richards would be a good example, I'm not saying sign him (although i would love to see it) but take his situation, he was worth big big money 18 months ago, a real star, but now his stock and his reputation has fallen. This is the perfect time to go in for a player like this, BEFORE he comes back and has a stunning season, regains his England place and is suddenly worth £25 million again. We don't have to buy the form players all the time. Rafa was heavily linked with Kenwyn Jones a while back, of course it was when the player was in good form and scoring goals and his value seemed to soar (if you believe what you read). Well if Rafa really did like him then, I say go and sign the player now, when he's just had a dodgy season and Sunderland are paying big bucks for Peter Crouch. When you don't have a lot a lot money (at least not as much as your biggest rivals) then you are relying on producing big stars from the youth ranks (notice our two are getting a little long in the tooth and won't be around all that much longer) or you have to be a clever bugger in the transfer market (a'la Wenger).GYBS wrote:We cant afford to waste money on expensive english or even foreign lads who may or may not make it .
