Still though.. if we sell Arbeloa and Johnson gets injured then who plays right back? Mascherano? Carra?

Degan?  Must have something about him.

unless he asks to go, i would have thought he's good cover for lb, rb ....

In what universe? :D

I'm glad we've made a move to address one of our weaker positions with a player who has everything in his locker to be a top RB.  Whether we paid over the odds for him is kind of immaterial at this point.  For one, it will depend how he goes.  The 20 odd million we paid for Torres looks an absolute bargain in hindsight, so the price is a bit relative to performance.  For two, it's the cost of doing business in the premiership transfer market these days so, as long as he's the RB Rafa wants, we were always going to be paying a fair wedge for him.  Finally, it will all become clearer once the transfer window closes.  If he's our only 'big money' signing and we're left weak in other areas some will no doubt say it was a mistake to waste the cash on Johnson.  Personally, I think there will be a few more twists in the summer transfer saga before September 1 rolls around so I'm not prepared to say now, in mid-June, that it was a mistake to drop such a substantial pile of dosh on Johnson.  As with all things, time will tell, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

What gets me is we´re supposed to selling off the deadwood underperformers yet the transfer gossip is about Alonso, Mash, Torres and Arby. Funny old world.

I would be happy to see Johnson join. He offers us a more attacking option and RB and can also play as a RM as well.

That's only because top teams know that they're not going to get their supporters' pulses racing nor the press wonks w.anking over rumours that they're "in for Dossena" or are "planning to swoop for El Zhar."  Chest thumping about signing Alonso or Masch sounds much better. :D

17 million is just too much imo. Anyway, hopefully he will prove himself as someone that worth that amount of money. Just like Torres did.

I think he offers more going forward than Arb, £17m seems a lot but looking at the transfer fees going around at the moment its silly season

Apparently, Portsmouth still owe us 7 million for the Crouch deal so could be more like 10 mill unless this 17 million includes all that which if thats the case is a a bit of a rip off

Blast from the past.

How's it going mate ?

Anyways regarding Johnson, i've said all along he will be a good signing imo and a definate improvement.

The fee is OTT though.
So long as it doesnt impact on any other potential signings then i dont care that much.

Can we stop bitchin' about the fee and focus on one question: is he the long term RB we've been looking for to win the league or have we bought a lemon?
