Looks like a a done deal now with it being BBC main headline

Liverpool poised to sign Johnson

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/8102625.stm

Liverpool look to have won the race to sign England defender Glen Johnson after agreeing a fee in the region of £17m with Portsmouth.

Reds' boss Rafael Benitez is confident he has beaten off interest from Chelsea in the 24-year-old and expects to make him his first summer signing.

Manchester City had also registered an interest in Johnson, but it is believed Anfield is his preferred destination.

Benitez is now likely to sell Andrea Dossena to help fund the deal.

Johnson, who joined Portsmouth from Chelsea in a £4m deal two years ago, emerged as Benitez's prime target after having an outstanding season at Fratton Park last season.

Benitez is working within financial restrictions in the transfer market this summer, but it is understood Liverpool are still owed money from the deal that took Peter Crouch to Portsmouth last summer.

Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa could also be sacrificed to raise cash towards the Johnson deal, with Real Madrid being linked with an £8m move.

He has cemented a place as England's first-choice right-back under coach Fabio Capello and played in the two recent World Cup qualifying victories against Kazakhstan and Andorra.

Johnson signed a new four-year deal at Portsmouth in January, but club officials accepted they could not stand in his way if he was offered the opportunity to move a club playing in the Champions League.

Couldn't agree more.

And with the likely departure of Arby and with the money still owed to use for Crouch to my mind it is only going to cost circa 3-5Mil.

I won't be satisfied till it's officially announced from either club. Can't be trusting the likes of City or Chelsea with a last minute bid.

well Glen Johnson will offer something different from the full backs we have. My only worry is he focuses too much on attacking than defending but hey ho, breaking teams down has been the bigger problem for seasons gone so I'm ready to give him a fair chance. Take it Arby's off now then?

It would be good if we kept him as backup but it looks we need money so I guess he will be sold.

Agree with Dundalk, he has a lot of great attributes and hes the first choice english full back who will be going to the world cup! Hes young and only going to get better by playing at Liverpool and more games for England! When the likes of Pennant signed he was nowhere near the england set up and had no experience in europe, Johnson has has a taste of that with chelsea!

And this argument of £17m must get u world class players is a joke, unfortunately its only upwards of £20m that will get u anything near world class and even at that some of the signings are a joke, mario gomez went to Bayern recently for £25m, hes hardly world class is he?

I would be very happy if we got Johnson for that amount mentioned considering were still owed £7m for Crouch!

Interesting times for arbeloa!!

I don't see what "first choice for England" is supposed to be proving. So are Emile Heskey and David James.

I would be pleased to see Johnson in a Liverpool shirt tbh, we have seen what he is capable of doing when he gets forward and imo would offer a lot more than Arbeloa.

Still though.. if we sell Arbeloa and Johnson gets injured then who plays right back? Mascherano? Carra?
