Nobody at first thinks i know i will gamble, take this drug, drink ale and that will f'ck me over and possibly fck my life up.

But the majority of people can do these things every now and then and not get addicted, the addictive personality thing is not in everyone.

Some people start like that and pick up the buzz, that with their personality can spiral out of control.

Yes 100% agree , it was their own fault for choosing to do what every major influence in their life was doing. But perhaps they just didnt realise and if they did they would never put that first bet on again.

But there is massive risks  out there when taking those choices - they are well documented and always in the limelight and those risks are massive - many many people in the world are testament to that and the warnings are there for all to see yet some still take those risks . If they didnt realise the risks then they must be living in a bubble or on another planet .

I prefer physical challenges - my current one is to swim 10 miles next summer, I´m training 5 days a week for that. Then I´m playing with a old challenge thats haunted me for years... to row the atlantic. Then ride a pushbike to Central Asia. Then sail the atlantic singlehanded, finally drive my old car all the way to Shanghai via Iran, Central Asia and western China.

So do I know which horse will win a race?  Do I héll.

Heres a thought if a man becomes depressed because of a gambling addiction...would he get your sympathy(maybe sympathy is the wrong word) but im sure you get me.
Would you say then he was worthy of compassion and help as he was in the same boat as you?..
Or would you say feck him,hes depressed because he became addicted to gambling and was in control of his own actions!

Heres another one for you...Perhaps people become addicted to things because they are depressed and just dont know it as it is a whole new emotion.... and they use the buzz to fill the void??

How do you know i havent experienced it or understand it ?? there is always little twists  you can make about something - Say hamman was that worried about his gambling he wasnt concentrating and was driving and killed someone ? then what ? a drug addict or a gambling addict kills for money to get their fix and feed their habit ? what then ?

Oh i can grasp it alright -

Hamman - earns millions each year - more than we can ever dream of earning - decides he wants to gamble for the thrill and runs up massive debts and throws all his money away gambling - money that the funs helped fund - money that could of been put to better use in the world - and you want me to show sympathy for someone who was more privilaged than i could dream off but threw it away through his own stupidity no thanks.

Did you show sympathy to adams or best or merson or mutu or anyone else who has thrown away their lives through drugs drink gambling etc ?

what if you are feeling depressed one day and fail to repair a helicopter properley, etc etc etc

have you ever played the lottery? this is gambling, are you saying you have never gambled in your life? have you ever had a drink, have you ever smoked. Ok the dugs and smoking is a choice people make that will harm their health so i understand why you say no sympathy, however we all gamble on certain things, and for some people this becomes an addiction. even the sweepstake in the office for the grand national is gambling, people with adictive personalities get addicted, thats just in their nature

Depression - illness.

Gambling - addiction.

That is the difference. A mental or physical dependency on a substance/passtime is not an illness, it's a weakness for a particular "high".

We can let the happy nappy brigade dress it up all they want, but drug addiction, alcoholism, smoking and gambling are not illnesses. If they were, they would not be curable through will-power alone. They are the result of actions taken by the addict.

I'm not implying that addictions aren't devastating. I'm just pointing out that the only people who label addictions "illnesses" are the limp-wristed "everyone's a victim" brigade who are rapidly ruining this country.
