It's funny how everyone needs a scapegoat. I could have sworn it took Neverton 118 minutes to score, and that we had the vast majority of the game to go ahead, before Lucas was sent for a shower...

Lucas tackles like a four year old. Does all the things the coaches tell you not to do when tackling, what happened to standing him up and not diving in ??? he constantly makes these daft challenges and its starting to cost us games now. Terrible player and should never be selected ahead of Mascherano or Alonso unless there legs are broke!

I thought that might be the case.

Quite right, but that won't stop Lucas bashing. He had a tidily effective game, the first yellow was a poor refereeing decision and the second was down to a poor pass by everyone's hero Skrtel. Sad that their players got away with a number of fouls, Lucas was booked for each of two - one of which wasn't a foul. It must have been a totting up process, totting up all the fouls they committed and booking Lucas for it!

He can be a tidy little player, the only problem is he isn't really strong in any one area. He can tackle and win the ball, he did so quite a bit last night, but he also does concede fouls. His passing is usually short, sharp and effective, but he doesn't have a telling through pass or range of pass to be a creative midfielder. He has a good running engine, but isn't particularly quick or a very good dribbler. And his shooting is perhaps his weakest suit, not that he often gets into shooting positions.

I thought perhaps he might take a set piece or two instead of wasteful Alonso. Trouble is when Gerrard is on the pitch he takes most/all set pieces, when Gerrard is off the pitch Alonso does. No variety, relies on accuracy from the one player taking most of it and them not having a poor game.

Who had the better game of Alonso or Lucas? Over the 76 mins he was on the pitch I'd say Lucas had a better game than Alonso. What summed up Alonso's night "nicely" was his 'short' corner pass that went straight to a blue shirt.

The problem last night was you could see that lucas was going to walk, he tackles like paul Scholes without the footballing ability.

People are going to laugh at this but surely for a back up midfielder Kevin Nolan could be no worst than him?

or even Guthrie, time to upgrade Jay spearing to the first team now we are short of midfielders with the bans coming they couldnt do a worst job than Lucas.

The thing is he probably would have blossemed in his natural position which was an attacking midfielder, but being used in the Mascherano roll he has been found out big time and he just cannot play in that roll because of the silly clumsy niggling tackles he puts in.

cant believe he plays for Brazil :sniffle
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

In my opinion, he's not that bad... problem is he's not that good either.

I agree Guthrie would be much better in that role. not so sure about Nolan myself, but I'll let you what...

Michael Johnson from Man city is apparently looking for a new club after being frozen out at city by all the big money buys.

He looks like a much prospect than lucas.  :nod

Just want to say i actually thought he was playing ok last night, his passing was better and he was winning some decent headers.
He also came in for some punishment from a few of the Everton players in the first half - with much worse tackles than the ones that he got his two yellows for.

Having said all of that, once he was on a yellow it was almost inevitable that he would get himself sent off, he didnt use his head at all, and the worst thing is - it wasnt a surprise.
I think he was very unlucky with the first booking but once booked Rafa should have taken him off, the lad is an accident waiting to happen.
That cost us any chance of winning that game without penalties last night and left us hanging on against a poor Everton side without any strikers.

Johnson would prob be better than Lucas but City were turning down bids of over 8 mil for him during the window .

As for Guthrie well i cant see where he is rated from ? he was ok at bolton - nothing fantastic and then at newcastle every time i have seen he hasnt impressed at all - then when we played them and lucas played against him guthrie did nothing .

I thought he had a decent game till he walked. He worked hard did a lot of covering and put his foot in when needed. He obviously needs to show a little more if he is ever to become a regular first team player, but did enough last night to leave me still uncertain if he will ever step up rather than convincing me that he won't make it.

thought so too saint - he was winning some good tackles was passing the ball pretty well as well and covered a lot of ground . just needs to cut out the silly fouls which may come with more experience and maturity .

Yeah mate, my only frustrations with him really are he tries to make a few silly tackles and doesn't try to do a little more when he has the ball.

The first could be down to adapting to a new more defensive role than he was used to in Brazil, and maybe the second is a confidence issue or possibly instructions to keep it simple? When he had a decent run in the side last season I thought he started playing much better, but obviously being in and out of the side this season makes things much more difficult as well.

I think we saw against Newcastle that he DOES have more to offer, now we just need to see it much more often.

I agree he had a good game last night.

However he doesn't use his brain. He gave away a free kick that lead to a goal against evertone in the league game (I think - or was it wigan??) - anyway.

the first yellow wasn't deserved, but if you're on a yellow, you dont make challlenges like he did, or you will be sent off.

Lucas is an ok squad player but there is no way he should be getting as many games as he is, same goes for Kuyt, it's time for rafa to take a bit of a gamble and give some of the up an coming youngsters a go, you never know, the next Stevie G or Fowler might be there waiting to emerge if just given a chance. he could for example let one of the yongsters start a game and if they are looking out of their depth sub them or sub them on when we are controlling the game, not that that has happened in a while now.  :D

it was yossi that gave away the free kick in the first game redman and lucas gave away the pen in the wigan game . Your right about using the brain as he was definatly niave last night after getting first yellow which is a shame as it ruined another good game for him  .

And heimdall kuyt showed last night his worth to the team - the gus work rate was immense and he got involved all game long - his touch was very good just took once option wrong when it was 3 against 2 .
