January clearout - Should we or shouldn't we?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Again it appears that Rafa has to sell before he can buy, and if we are to strengthen in January it will have to be at the expense of outgoing players. Added to this is the problem over contracts for some of our players that we apparently can't afford to renew at the moment. (Kuyt and Agger are down to their final 18 months at Christmas, as is Rafa himself.)

I think Pennant, Degen, Dossena, Benayoun, Voronin (out on loan, but a sale would be better) maybe even Babel could all be available for the right price, with maybe a few of the reserves made available as well.

Who would you be willing to sacrifice (or maybe glad to see the back of ) in order to strengthen, or would it be better to wait till the summer and not disrupt the squad?

I think we can get rid of Lucas, Degen, and maybe one of Pennant/Benayoun.  Kuyt and Agger have proved to be handy this season (so far) so I think we should hold them.  Degen I think is useless, but havn't seen him play enough.  Then if we get a decent amount of cash for another winger then Pennant or Benayoun should be shipped out.

When I have more time I'll try to post something that makes sense :P

Pennant and Lucas. The sale of these two could buy a poacher. Who? I don't know....

Forget selling Degen...who's going to buy him?  I'm not sure Dossena would be worth anywhere near what we paid at the moment either, and that would leave us very thin on the ground at LB.  I suppose we could flog Babel but I think he's worth holding onto, for all of his frustrating qualities.  So, it really is down to the likes of Pennant, Benayoun and Lucas.  Personally, I'd be happy to sell all three for the right price, provided there was someone worth buying with the proceeds in January.

I agree,we can afford to ship out 5 or 6 "fringe players" or sh'ite players if ya like and bring in 1 or 2 quality ones!Cant think of exactly who yet,its too early to think and I need coffee.
But our squad is way too big and has been for years.Theres also the reserves, its time to make decisions on who (if any) are gonna make it and ship the ones that are not out.Just because they aint good enough for LFC does'nt mean they cant have a good career elsewhere

Degen was another odd signing by Rafa, where the fee (none) seemed to rule over the benefits of signing him (so far also none) But as with Dossena, I was under the impression there is a restriction of moving clubs in the same season - is it not once a season? On CM07 they do a Coaching Badge and one of the questions is just that, I'm sure the answer is once a season and I'd guess they'd have researched it.

Personally I wouldn't make too many changes, Rafa signed a number of players with the long term picture in mind and so, tempting as it may be, is there any point selling players like Lucas and Babel? Of course we went and spent £20m on one player, that would have been ok had that player then looked worth it and scored a few goals. That hamstrings us in January, I am hoping that ease of progress through the CL group stage may see the owners free up some cash anyway.

As for who I might sell to raise cash, well maybe Hyypia if we get Skrtel back and while he's still worth money. He's not in the CL squad, he is pretty much acting as cover and maybe it's time we brought in someone younger - from outside the squad or within Anfield. More obviously I'd offload Pennant, how much we'd get and whether we can budge the awkward fecker is another matter. To be honest there isn't much mileage in this thread other than people naming players they don't much care for, maybe Benayoun could be sold but we'd be weakening our squad to 'strengthen' it and we're more or less down to bare bones anyway ie there isn't too much to spare and what spare there is ain't worth much

Who to bring in? Well I'd go for Owen, some injury history but that should be reflected in the price and it would be quality without paying the earth. Despite his injuries he's still scored more than Keane, the only nagging concern I have is Rafa brought in Fowler who did a decent job and then dumped him. If ever a free signing could have worked it was with Fowler, cost nothing, gave us his all and did a job. Now we're without Torres, Keane can't buy a league goal and Rafa is not giving N'Gog a chance.

You could view this discussion as if it were the summer transfer window, we did all the wheeling and dealing and got rid of most of the surplus - £11m for Crouch, £4m (?) for Riise etc. But we then threw £7m at Dossena, £3m at a reserve goalkeeper, £20m at Keane and it was a lot of money and I bet I'm not the only one thinking that much for three players that old, and for what they've done so far, is money poorly spent. They may come good, but already people are talking about selling players.

Just remember, if we think players are average or :censored: and want to sell them, then other clubs are hardly likely to be queuing up to throw money our way for them. Again Voronin gets mentioned although in truth he hasn't been given much of a chance. Toss up for me between Voronin and Keane as to who has been the better signing, the fee would make Voronin the clear winner and as we're short of goals I'd suggest he might be worth recalling not selling. If people think we can sell (permutations including) Degen, Dossena, Voronin, Pennant, Lucas and Babel and rake in a fortune then they're dreaming. I'm not sure Stoke and Sunderland are rich enough to buy up all our unwanted players, as much as they might offer for them. A lot of those are either regulars or getting enough games that we'd have to replace them with better quality and are unlikely to be improving on them with less money than we'd get for them.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

On LFC.tv,it says we have 42 players eligible for the first team!! :D
I really cant see us needing them all,the thing is though out of all those players.Who can we afford to let go that we will get any decent ££ for??
Very few!
The squad is huge but the vast majority of them will never play first team football at LFC.I know all clubs are the same but our competetors have more quality when ya look past the "starting 11"

Sell Lucas for.........                      5m
Sell Pennant for.......                     4m
Sell some reserve players, total...... 3m
Sell Voronin.................................3m

Keep Benni and Babel, they are decent squad players.

Total sales: 15m.

with that 15m buy a quality right winger or fullback.

Also why would Spurs want Pennant when they just bought Bently? Pennant, Dossena, Lukas, Degen & Voronin. They all have 2 things in common. They all need to go but no one will buy them becasue they are shyte. Shyte is maybe a bit hard for Pennant but he still needs to go.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

I'd sell Robie KEane back to Spurs, if we can get our money ack then that would be a result.
