I have just sat down and watched the full highlights of the game and couldn't help but notice our natural width from Pennant on the right and Riera on the left.

We had an unusual balance right across the pitch. It seems that Rafa has performed a U-Turn on Pennants future. I'm all for him making that spot his own.

It must be delightful for Xabi, Masch, and Stevie to spray a ball to either flank and have somebody pick it up.

while torres is out he will play, but when nando is fit rafa will drop him and put kuyt back on the wing and i cant see it change unless he plays awsome while torres is out.

One of the things i dont like about JP or Yossi is they both :censored:

I only think Pennant was playing because Torres was injured and Mascherano was not fully fit to play after such a long flight on the bounce of two very physical south american WC qualifiers. Mascherano should be back for the Atletico match, and I would expect Gerrard to play behind Keane with Kuyt out wide to start. We might even partner mascherano with Lucas and play babel over Riera if Babel is fit

He did better than i thought he would . still cut in touch much when has the pace to take people on but did produce a few decent crosses , think he may of earnt himself a few more chances.

He did OK, thats about it, decent crossing but nothing spectacular, he obviously only played because of injuries but i think he did enough to justify being selected again in home games where we need to stretch the opposition.
He should be starting in the Stokes and West Broms at home i reckon.
But we all know that when all players are fit he wont get near the team.

I only saw the Footy First highlight on Sky and TBH didn't know he was actually on the pitch from what they showed of the first half. The commentators on City on Saturday said at halftime that he needed to introduce himself to the game in the second half as he'd done feck all in the first 45mins.
To be fair to him though he did come into the game a lot during the 2nd half. Some of his crosses were top notch as well and it was just lacking somebody getting into the box to get on the end of them.
The problem with Pennant though is that he doesn't get to the line a lot of the time and as kopite_1232002 said he does tend to shit out of 50-50 tackles. Also if he's not up for the game he will disappear off the pitch like he did on Saturday for the first 45.

If he were to adopt the attitude of Kuyt and the creativity of Riera (from what he's shown up to now) then Pennant could be up there with the best wingers around, but he does lack these final qualities to take him that final step.

MOTD highlight reels - they have a lot to answer for.

Movement was awwful and he shi.t out of too many challenges.

judging from this thread it seems only leon and myself actually attended the game and therefore have an unbiased view of how little pennant contributes. pennant is woeful and will always be woeful despite the one occassional cross that finds a red shirt.

He did have a shi'te first half but did come into it a bit better in the second IMO and played a lot better!
My problem with Pennant is he only has one dimension to his game.Try to get the ball up the line and get it in the box.
YES that is of course his main job as a RW and in fairness he can do it well at times,but the amount of times Wigan pressured us from their left was a joke in the first half,Pennant done practically nothing to try and stop them.Yeah Kuyt would have been running "like a headless chicken" but at least he would have offered some protection to the full back...Pennant offers zero!
Another thing,we were over run in MF a bit for large parts of the game,again yes Pennant was on the right but Kuyt when played there gets into the middle and makes tackles,tortures the opposition when this happens...Pennant rarely tried.
Well done to the lad though for setting up the goal though,credit where its due.

Id prefer Kuyt on the right over Pennant every day of the week,yes he looses the ball sometimes but he does a lot more than Pennant ever will to make up for it.A few on here have said that Pennant had a "great game" well all i can say to that is if people think that was great they are too easy pleased!

I dont think everyone on here would be pleased until we score 5(one being a corner!), keep the opposition to 0 goals, 1 shot, and 30% possession!

I know, but sometimes I try to imagine what would need to happen to get the doom and gloomers happy, because it shouldn't be too hard to make the happy clappers happy, since their happy and all
