Owen

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

John Barnes' Granny wrote:I think the newspapers have exagerated the consequences of Owen leaving, saying we'll struggle to score goals and his departure is another nail in our coffin.

I find that funny as the same newspapers were stating last year that Owen was over-rated, off form and injury prone, and was one dimensional!

I was and am a big fan of Michael Owen and it would  have been nice if he had stayed, but the fact of the matter is that both he and Liverpool were getting stale, and a change is good for both parties. With Owen's pace the temptation was always there to hit fast early balls to him, but that had become tired and opposition teams were learning to cope with Owen.

Liverpool have always sold top players and prospered, we survived the sales of Keegan, Souness, Rush and Fowler, and as the old saying goes, when one door closes another opens.

The focus is now on Cisse and whether he can use Liverpool to become a world class player now that Owen is gone, and the (very) early indications show that he can.

good post jbg.

i agree that our style of play had become entirely predictable and based around michael owen's pace on the counter attack. ok it worked for a couple of seasons but once defences sussed it out we had no plan b.

in my opinion, cisse has all the attributes to be as good as michael owen if not better. :)

I think Cisse might be able to hold the ball up a lot better than Owen ever did.

Inspiring article re the new Boss and the reality check needed for us all.
When he arrived at the club Benitez said the Owen had been sitting on a new contract offer from the club for a year
:(   Those details should have been ironed out or he could have been sold for more much earlier.. as it is Benitez took the "bull by the horns"[I] as most Spaniards do .. and did the right thing ..Olay

That's a cracking article, really puts a different slant on losing Owen.
I was pretty depressed by the whole saga, particularly it's timing on the eve of a new season and the way it appeared to be conducted.
Perhaps in time we might even come to view Owens departure as a water shed and the point at which a new successful era began. Here's hoping anyway!  :)

Former Liverpool player Michael Robinson believes that Owen's departure could be a blessing in disguise as Liverpool's style of play was tailored to hitting early balls to him and playing with Cisse and Baros could see a return to possession football.

The person who wrote that article is a pessimistic dickhead. Probably dislikes Liverpool for some reason.

The person who wrote that seems to be basing a lot of their article on just one game with a new team and a new manager that will take time to gel as a unit.

They should give them a chance before they start predicting doom.

The writer is a person who is
a)pessamist
b)Owen fan who can't get over his departure
c)knows nothing about football
d)should be stripped away of his "opinion".
e)shouldn't be called a Liverpool fan at all

There seems to be a lot of talk about how will we replace Owen, and indeed can we replace Owen? The answer is we don't need to replace him - we already have Cisse who looks the business (so far) and Baros who in Euro 2004 was head & shoulders above him. Much as I like Owen and rate him enormously, opposing teams have for a long time rumbled his game - electric pace and a good touch. But his pace has slowly deserted him and defenders are finding it increasingly easy to play against him. I'd love to have seen Owen stay with us for another season under Benny and alongside Cisse but if he was messing the club around then it's time to go. Time for a fresh approach I think. We need another striker as Mellor will never make the grade but I've got faith in Baros & Cisse, they'll come good.

As for the £8m I can't help but think we've been robbed, but has anyone put a value on Nunez? 25 yrs old, Spanish international, Real Madrid player...  must be worth a bob or two...

From ex Red Michael Robinson

Michael Owen is one of the reasons Liverpool are ******, because the aim is just to get him one on one. Owen has only got one medium - come short and go long. I'd have loved to have been as good as him - the trouble is, Houllier has built a whole team around him and every other team in England knows about it. Houllier is so stereotyped in his thoughts. It's not fair on Michael, it's not fair on the team and it's not fair on the victims like me who watch it. At Real Madrid, Owen would be a substitute.

I think it would have been better for Owen had he given Benitez a year as I think Benitez could have improved his game, but his loss to Liverpool is not as drastic as some quarters make out.
