Can't agree with Leon about Gerrard and Torres, I just hope to god they are fit, and if they are FIT they must play. While it would be nice to see the other players stand up and be counted, the chances of it actually counting against the mancs without our best two players are pretty slim.

Why ?

Gerrard and Torres do not save the shots, or defend the corners or make the last ditch tackles or do the donkey work in midfield.

Point being, no doubt they are our two best players, and no doubt they are World Class, but I think we have the personell beyond those two to compete.

United, the last three seasons have come to our place and we have outplayed them, all game - no questions, and they have nicked it each time.

We need to hang in there, and use our new found resoluteness to still grab a goal without conceding.

I think that the kind of lift a win against United without those two could give the other players in our squad is immeasurable.

Why ?

Where on earth do you get silly ideas like that from  :D When was the last time we excelled in a game without Torres or Gerrard?

United, the last three seasons have come to our place and we have outplayed them, all game - no questions, and they have nicked it each time.

As they will do again if we don't start scoring against them, and without Gerrard and Torres the chances of us scoring are much less than with them ..... imho anyway.

We need to hang in there, and use our new found resoluteness to still grab a goal without conceding.

Why just hang in there, why not try and win the game comfortably if possible, hang in there only if forced. Should you go into a game believing the best you can do is "hang in there", or should you go into a game thinking you can WIN.

I think that the kind of lift a win against United without those two could give the other players in our squad is immeasurable.

I agree mate, I just think the likelyhood of that happening is much less than if Torres and Gerrard start.

Our best hope is to surprise them with Benayoun or N'Gog because they are quite unknown in the Liverpool pattern of play so that could be a possibilty?

But we need Kuyt of the field to make any TECHNICAL impact in to their defence, (Possibly a game for Pennant?)

Anyway someone has to step up for them as well as they have lost their "out-ball" in Ronaldo's absence.

No Gerrard, no Torres, we have not beaten them in the league in years, they are confident, we are in crisis and it does not look good. I smell a victory and as someone else said probably from an unlikely source.

I like it when we carry the underdog tag as we play well and normally win, for that as well not wanting to rush them back I hope they (Torres and Gerrard) do not play (unless of course they are 100% fit which I doubt).

Every game Ferguson finds another weakness against us. Short corner last year, let Carragher or Sissoko have the ball because their use of it is awful, Masherano sent off in the last one but i doubt we would have got a result that day if we'd had 12 on the pitch. Last minute goals, silly free kicks leading to goals. The list goes on and on.

If we score first I genuinely believe we'll win the game. The worry comes if they score first because they usually come here to defend, nick a goal and we then struggle to break them down.

STEVEN GERRARD is set to hand Rafa Benitez a huge boost - by giving himself every chance of featuring against Manchester United on Saturday.

The Liverpool captain will return to full training in the next few days and should he come through that with no ill effects, his chances of facing United will increase dramatically.

It is less than two weeks since Gerrard underwent double groin surgery and as recently as last weekend, he was forced to reluctantly admit defeat in his battle to be fit for the visit of Liverpool’s biggest rivals.

But his rehabilitation programme has gone much better than expected since then and he is now fit enough to join in with his team mates as they prepare for their biggest Premier League game of the season so far.

Gerrard now stands a realistic chance of being involved in Saturday’s lunchtime showdown with the reigning champions, although the final decision as to whether or not he plays will rest with manager Rafa Benitez.

Benitez, though, remains cautious about Gerrard’s chances of figuring against Alex Ferguson’s side and will not risk him unless he is 100% convinced he has totally shaken off the after effects of two groin operations in the space of two days.

“You never know, he is still progressing,” said the Reds boss. “The key is the fitness of the player – it makes a massive difference if he has confidence. That is the main thing for him.”

I dont see why everyone is getting so hung up on this.  We didnt lose the Premiership losing or drawing against the top3 last year.  We lost it coz we couldnt beat the smaller teams.

I say don't risk Gerrard and Torres and if we lose, then we lose, but at least we will have them fully fit for hopefully the rest of the season.  Playing them now could antagonise their injuries and we may be without them for a lot longer.

Ideally we should leave them both out and let the rest of our squad win the game for us.  We have plenty of players who are good enough, they just need to turn up and show half the passion that the paying support show.
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

s@int wrote:So basically what you are saying is that without Gerrard and Torres we have no goal threat, so the mancs wont know who the fk to mark, and we might just get a goal from an unlikely source ..... Kuyt  :D

Exactly!

Or more precisely our ONLY goal threat is Gerrard and Torres, they are negated by the manc marking and so we're fooked! How many goals have we scored against them under Rafa? Two is it? An own goal and a Crouch header
