It looks as if Villa are relying on the outcome of the Barry deal before they make big money moves themselves. It's probably putting strain on their plans for the season, as signing players can very much depend on timing, and some clubs and players won't be prepared to wait for them to move. I think his exasperations in the press demonstrate that he needs to reach a decision pretty soon, within a week I'd say. A lot depends on Barry himself though, and if push comes to shove whether he's prepared to play for Villa this season in the same vein as he has done in previous seasons. It's tough to judge exactly what the relationship is like between club and player, but outwardly at least, O'neill seems to have mellowed in his stance towards Barry in an apparent attempt to convey a strengthening in his position. As, if Barry isn't committed in the forthcoming season, for the reason that he's potentially missed a dream move, O'neill may have a problem.

With regards our transfers generally - If we can get Keane in, that'll probably be it for strikers. Rafa talked about 'two, maybe three' signings a few weeks ago, and with Ngog signed and Keane supposedly on his way, Barry may eventually find himself here - in which case I think we'll still lack the necessary quality.

Reina

Finnan/Deggan   Carra             Agger        Dossena

                 Gerrard    Mash       Barry

                       Keane         New creativeplayer
                               Torres

I really can't see Rafa buying Silva after what he said recently about wingers, so I am hoping he gets us a surprise creative second striker and I think we will be there or there abouts. If we have to go with Kuyt or Babel playing most games I think we will struggle to sustain a challenge. I think we may need a new right back too if Arbeloa does leave and Degen is only as good as we have seen so far.

Hes gettin cheeky now

Martin O'Neill believes Gareth Barry should resist the urge to move to Liverpool because he is held in higher regard at Aston Villa.

England midfielder Barry's proposed move to Liverpool has become one of this summer's ongoing transfer sagas as Villa hold out for an £18million asking price.

The 27-year-old has admitted a desire to join the Reds and was recently booed at a pre-season friendly with Walsall, but he received warm applause when replacing the injured Wilfred Bouma in Saturday's Intertoto Cup victory over Odense at Villa Park.

And with Liverpool having failed to make contact for seven days, manager O'Neill feels Barry - who is eager for UEFA Champions League football - should be in no doubt about how highly he is valued in the Midlands.

Message
"Having not heard anything from Liverpool for some time it is clear we value him more than they do," said O'Neill. "The fact they have not answered us for a week sends out a real message.

"We obviously don't want him to go, so the price we are asking is a fair and realistic one for a player who is so good. In fact I think it is really cheap.

"He has been with us for 10 years and the crowd reaction was really strong in his favour.

"I don't think there's any doubt about what we all want at Villa Park. We want him to stay at the club.

Terrific
"I am not in the habit of encouraging players to talk to me after games but I told Gareth he had been terrific. We need him at this club. He would be a terrific loss for us."

And O'Neill - who steered Villa to a sixth-placed Premier League finish last season - is eager for Barry to stay in order to witness further improvements.

"My own view is that he should hang around for another year and see if we can make further progress as he would want," added O'Neill.

"Gareth is still only 28 next year - if we don't get where he wants to go, everybody would wish him well."

I like O'Neill, but he just cannot stop talking and after his comments today it seems to me as though hes now concerned he will be stuck with an unhappy player.

Villa set out their demands and we have simply not responded, so right now it may be best if he buttons it for once and just gets on with his pre season preparations including sorting his Barry issues within the Villa ranks, and not in the national press.

Well, it is obivious where this is heading now.
Villa and O'Neill are doing everything to make us the villains in this mess  :D

Barry was just tempeted by the dark side of the force for a brief moment and will come to to love life at Villa park again.
Might as well let them keep him as I would be furious
if we went up there and paid 18 million to Villa for him.

If Alonso was to leave for 15/16m  then fare enough we would need an adequate replacement Barry IMO would be more than, so i wouldnt mind so much paying the 18m to get him to the club, as things stand im starting to think we would be better off putting it on the back burner and give Alonso a season to show us we're better off with him, if it doesnt work-out we can go back in for Barry at the end of the season and because his contract has run down get him a lot cheaper.
Dont judge a book by the cover, unless you cover just another, because blind exceptance is a sign,

I honestly feel that if Aston Villa are not willing to compromise on the price then it is definately in our best interests to walk away and allocate the bulk of our funds to securing Robbie Keane and a wide player.

Martin O'Neill is quoted as saying "We obviously don't want him to go, so the price we are asking is a fair and realistic one for a player who is so good. In fact I think it is really cheap".

Either he is on a completely different planet to everyone else - £18,000,000 for a 28 years old player that has openly admitted to wanting to leave the club.....or he feels that backing down and lowering his demands is going to make him look pretty stupid!

I am in favour of signing barry...at the right price and that shouldn't be in excess of £15,000,000 in my opinion.

Alonso is a bit too lethargic for the Premiership so Barry would definately suit our system better but I feel that if Alonso were to stay and Barry didn't arrive this could spur Xabi on to attempt to recapture some of the form he showed in his first season.

Pursuing this Barry thing is damaging to Liverpool's prestige.

We've alllowed Martin O'Neill to treat us like a bytch.

For a player grossly overvalued.

This is not good business, but unfortunately I expect that from Liverpool FC.

Thing is though manhattan , Liverpool haven't said a thing for weeks , it's MON who keeps spouting his gob off in the press. As far as i know LFC made a final bid acouple of weeks ago and have left it at that .

exactly...Villa and MON are starting to get worried.  Wasn't it a few weeks ago MON said he would set a deadline for us to make a final bid?  He's gone quiet about that and i think he'll soon be in a lose/lose situation.

Lose Barry for less money than you want

or

Keep a player who doesn't want to stay and who will upset the dressing room and fans
