One things for sure, Rafa doesnt exactly get a move on does he?

Can't help but think, mate, that he wouldn't need to be haggling over a few quid if the owners were willing to put their hands into their pocket.  As little as 10 million pounds from them and we'd probably be able to sew up pretty much all the transfers we're currently sweating over.

I just hope we don't get into a Heinze situation here where the deal doesn't come off and then six weeks into the season we are ruing the fact that we didn't do the deal. We rectified that one by belatedly signing Skyrtel in the January window, but as we know it was a costly error. I still can't help thinking that whether it's Parry, Rafa, the owners or whoever else it doing the negotiating, we can't seem to get the hang of it.

Firstly we lose potential sell-on value for Crouch for letting his contract run down, then we offer too low for Barry and get strung out, then we don't meet the market on Alonso and end up with the buyers looking elsewhere. I'm not personally massively in favour of either the Alonso sale or the Barry buy (I'm kind of neutral on both TBH as I think we have more pressing priorities) but it really is hard to come to the conclusion that these situations are being well handled. Many have said that Xabi is a good pro for instance and I think he is too, but in fairness it is just as well the way he has been treated these last few weeks. Fecking rubbish way to treat a bloke who seems to all intents and purposes to be a really nice fella IMHO.

Parry does the negotiating not Rafa and we didnt just let Crouch's contract run down we offered him a new deal and he knocked us back so we sold for a profit, where's the problem, i dont know why you seem content to make out Rafa handled the situation poorly in every other post you make, i enjoy reading your opinions mate its just when you state the same think over and over again it gets a bit much.

btw abit out of topic, inter has signed mancini for 10 million, nasri is allegedly going to arsenal for 12... why aren't we making those kind of signings (not that I really want the former)? instead of trying to sign Barry and Keane for 17-20 millions...

It could be due to the fact that they are not proven players but in nasri case he's deffo one for the future . The price of barry has rocketed as he's now a england international and also the captain of the villa side and also one of the most consistent players in the premiership , the same could be said about keane who has a decnet scoring record for spurs and is a hard worker .

Nasri could be a risk as he's too young and not really that none yet , he hasn't set the world alight and the same could be said about barry and keane but they have the above reasons to justify their price tag .

Rafa or rick parry?? , what can rafa do if he does not have the funds, we don't even know our season's transfer budget , we pratically have to sell to buy and yes we have sold some fringe players enough to get us one quality winger , silva for 15 million but we also need another striker and someone to replace xabi if he goes , we cna only sign players if we have money which at the moment we have not much of it

Once again in the modern game its down to the CEO to conclude transfers not the manager, the last top flight manager to be able to handle money was David O'leary, it is now fully the domain of the CEO. I dare say Rafa is just as p!ssed off with this situation as we are, why do you thing they dont get on, because Parry cant deliver his targets. From what i understand Rafa gets to be more involved when dealing with spanish clubs, so its no supprise those deals seem to be done over night.

I'm still fucking concerned about this coming season.

We've been about 8/1 to win the league for a few seasons now, probably more than just a few seasons in fact, and subtle changes here or there won't change that IMO. The Manc's are firmly expecting to retain the title, Chelsea are firmly expecting to run them close, then there's us expecting to challenge but with nowhere near the same level of belief/confidence. Out of all the 'contenders' we say it more in hope than anyone else.

Near enough everyone on this forum was in despair at some point last season and it seems that the close season has tempered some of those concerns as there isn't a feeling of immediacy. I think it was widely acknowledged that we needed a fair bit more quality in certain areas, and we're yet to see that in this transfer window. I see Barry being a subtle change, but not a player who's going to take us to the next level.

If we really do intend to play with wingers next season, we're absolutely crazy not to address those areas in this transfer window.

I've been thinking the same myself!

To be honest though I dont think Rafa knows what system he will be playing next season until he sees who we get!
Its safe to say if Barry is our only addition he may stick with the 4-2-3-1.
But if we get Keane as well probably a 4-4-2..or maybe he will use them both!

Either way he needs to get in who we are buying now and get them training with the team so that they are familiar with new team mates and their role,so that they are ready for the first game!

Tony Barrett seems to think we've finally pulled out of the deal.

----
Liverpool put Gareth Barry deal on ice

Jul 16 2008 by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL are ready to put their move for Gareth Barry on ice - unless Aston Villa lower their valuation of the player.

The Reds protracted chase for the England international is now reaching epic proportions and with no sign of a deal being done Liverpool are ready to concentrate their efforts on bringing in Rafa Benitez’s remaining summer transfer targets.

With Villa refusing to budge on their £18m valuation of Barry the two clubs have reached stalemate as Liverpool are not prepared to pay that price.

The 27-year-old was today returning to training with Villa as Martin O’Neill softened his previously hardline stance on his wantaway club captain.

But Barry’s desire to quit Villa Park has not lessened, nor has Benitez’s desire to bring him to Anfield – meaning O’Neill will have to decide whether or not he wants to do deal with Liverpool or face the prospect of keeping a player who has already publicly admitted he sees his future elsewhere.

Villa kick off their competitive season on Saturday – after back-to-back defeats in friendlies – with an Intertoto Cup tie at Odense in Denmark, but Barry will not be involved.

The face-off between the two clubs has now been going on for more that two months and with the new Premiership season set to begin in just a month Benitez knows he cannot afford to see his team building plans held up any longer by Villa’s refusal to lower their price.

The Reds boss is keen to add two more new recruits to his squad and will now concentrate his efforts on bringing those players to Anfield before looking at the Barry situation once more, unless O’Neill is prepared to compromise in the meantime.

Meanwhile, Benitez is set to give several younger members of his squad another chance to impress in tonight’s pre-season friendly against Lucerne in Grenchen. Having seen his young charges acquit themselves well in Saturday's 1-0 win over Tranmere, Benitez is keen to see if they can maintain their high standards against the Swiss side.

Javier Mascherano, Nabil El Zhar and Dirk Kuyt all come into contention for a run out, having returned to training on Monday at Liverpool’s Swiss training camp, although the Reds boss is likely to restrict their roles at this stage.

Tonight’s match with Lucerne is live on five (6.35pm).

Perhaps rafa has finally done the right thing then and now hes going to let them come to us instead, lets see how much barry wants to join us, then maybe we can get him for a better price if MON has no choice

I'm not happy with that news, to be honest. Granted Aston Villa are negotiating hard, I cannot blame them.

At this point we shouldn't be signing more options and possibilities. If we want Barry that much, it must be because he'll be key in our idea of the team, not because he'll give us options.

If we're talking about a key player I wouldn't want to lose Barry, like we failed to sign Heinze. And if we have to pay an overprice of 4M then so be it. If we haven't those extra 4m, then don't sign up a expensive young keeper.

Anyhow, definite impressions about the transfer market will have to be done when season starts, as the market seems to be getting hot at the moment.
