It's all relative, Barry is a better player than Carrick and Hargreaves in my book and they both cost around about the same price. The only difference is that Barry is a year or two older. I reckon the clubs will end up agreeing on a fee of 17m for him. If we get 14ish for Alonso then it ends up beign a net spend of 3m. It's not such a big deal is it?

I agree with that.
Barry is the heart of the villa side, can play left back, left mid, DM or AM...
whereas hargreaves and carrick are far less versatile and cost the same.
im a lifelong LFC who lives in brum. I have met Barry, and know some of his close friends (and ex's) he has an excellent personality, trains harder than anyone, and is villa's Gerrard.
As a lot of my mates are villa fans i see him play often and he is an excellent player.
He just hasnt been able to do it on the big stage as villa are.
But if he does come to us, he will be a major success for the next 5 years
There are few english players available with so much prem experience who have consistently performed over the last 8 years

When will Rafa and every other manager we have learn?
I find this extremely frustrating if I'm honest.
Barry is an excellent footballer, lets make no mistake. The lad would be an asset to any team in world football, he's quick, powerful, technically excellent, defensively aware and has an excellent attitude and understanding of the game. Easily in my opinion Alonso's equal, he would probably add more short term aswell due to the fact I feel Alonso's gone slightly stale at Liverpool. I for one would be made up if we signed him. He's a player I've liked for a long time.
But the fact remains Alonso's still one of the best players at the club.
What is the point in selling your best players to replace them with other players of a similar calibre. Lets just say for aguements sake we had Barry and were looking to replace him with Alonso, I'd say exactly the same thing... there isn't enough of a quality difference either way to make a significant difference. Now, if Benitez is signing Barry with the view to him playing on the left or left back, I can see the logic in signing him, but surely then keeping Alonso is also a must. A midfield to me of Barry, Alonso, Mascherano and Gerrard looks very good, strong and solid. With goals and ball retention, a midfield of Babel, Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard doesn't seem much different in replacing Alonso with Barry.
The point is we should be looking to add to what we already have. Barry should be an addition, not a replacement. We'll never win anything replacing players like Alonso with Barry. Barry should be coming in replacing Riise, Babel, Leto etc, not one of our top players.
Its like going and selling Torres to buy Villa, pointless.
Liverpool have players there they can sell to raise funds, Crouch, Carson, Riise (I know he's just left), Kuyt, Lucas, Babel, Benayoun, Arbeloa, Finnan, Skyrtel, Aurelio...
Players like Alonso, Gerrard, Mascherano, Torres, Carragher, Agger and Reina should not be sold, but build upon.
The fact is, Barry offers more goals and mobility than Alonso, is probably a better athlete and is stronger. But Alonso dictates games and in Europe especially where ball retention and patience is vital he comes into his own. Alonso's is a better passer with far greater vision than Barry also. Barry's vision is good, but its flat, he's not capable of pulling out sublime through balls on the same regular basis Xabi can.
Both players are excellent and for me would be better in the same team rather than selling one to sign the other.

Top post stu, I agree with you here.
Unfortunatley mate, Rafa needs funds to buy Barry and if we need him as an addition, so he is going to sacrifice a top player inorder to get him, which is a shame really!

Why Alonso? Why not Crouch, Kuyt, Voronin or any of the other average players we have?
