19 mill for a utility player ?? wtf

no way mate

think utility is wrong word - he is an adaptable forward who can play next to torres- can play deeper than torres and can play either side of him in a wider attacking role. pretty much like tevez and shrek do for manure

Well pleased with this signing.  I've rated Keane since the 02 World Cup and I think he'll slot into our attack very, very well. :nod

well i think rafa is looking for a front three along the same lines as manure - interchanging with each other - no one stuck in same position . so babel torres kuyt and keane could provide this - just htink we need one more left sided player to make it complete .

He sounds like Father Ted
Robbie Keane, Robbie Keane.

Love it! :D
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Talksport topic for the afternoon (from 4pm) - Robbie Keane,  Whose done the better business Liverpool FC or Tottenham.  Why pay 20mil for a 28 year old etc etc. Might be worth a listen.

Anyway, I think Robbie is a good purchase and IMO we should now push very hard for the title.  He does create chances and will also IMO link up well with Torres. Also hopefully this will take defenders away from Gerrard (thus alleviate pressure) to do more of what he can do  Maybe we won't be over reliant on Torres and Gerrard now!!!

ROBBIE KEANE has the potential to make Fernando Torres an even better player.

Striker Keane, 28, last night signed a four-year deal worth £80,000 a week as he sealed a £20million move from Tottenham.

And Reds legend Ian Rush believes the Irishman is the perfect foil for Spanish sensation Torres, who hit 33 goals in his first English season.

Keane reminds Rush of former Kop star Kenny Dalglish.

Rush, who played alongside King Kenny during a glittering 346-goal Anfield career, insisted: “Keane is a creator — just like Kenny Dalglish.

“He scores goals but he creates a lot too and that will be good for Liverpool.

“I really loved playing with Kenny because he always knew when to feed the ball to me.

“Keane can play that role for Liverpool because he has good vision and a good sense of the space around him. That will suit Torres to the ground.

“It’s his hold-up play that is the key because he can bring Torres even more into the game.

“He can bring the best out of his team-mates and everyone around him will benefit.”

But another former Reds hero, Mark Lawrenson, is not sure it will prove money well spent.

The BBC pundit said: “As it stands, have Liverpool gone for the players that can score the goals to give them the title? Personally, I don’t think they have.

“Who is going to make sure that if Liverpool go all out to win games, they will score the goals to ensure it happens?

“The answer is Torres but 33 goals wasn’t enough to sustain a challenge last year and the odds are he won’t score that many again this season. He needs help.

“What if he falls over at Sunderland on the opening day of the season and is out for months?

“As good a player as Keane is, he is more of a streaky scorer. He will go on a run and get 10 in 10 but he can’t guarantee the kind of regular goalscoring that Torres made a habit of last season.”

Yet Keane’s countryman and ex-Anfield defender Phil Babb insisted: “I’d go as far to say he’ll be the closest thing they will have had since Robbie Fowler’s heyday.”

Robbie Keane vows to end Liverpool FC title drought

Jul 29 2008

As a lifelong Liverpool fan Robbie Keane has lived through the pain of the club’s 18-year title famine.

Now the 28-year-old Dubliner reckons he is at last in the right place to do something about that situation.

Keane was still at primary school the last time Liverpool lifted the league crown in 1990. And after completing his £20.3million move from Spurs today, the Irishman vowed to play his part in ending that title drought.

He said: "I don’t really remember that last title win, I was too young but now I hope I can contribute as part of the team that finally wins the league crown again.

"All my older brothers and the rest of the family are all mad-keen Liverpool fans and always talk about the great days of the past.

"Now I have fulfilled my own dream of joining the club, I believe we can seriously challenge for the title.

"This club has stature, great players and tradition. There is no reason we cannot finally win the title again."

Keane, though, admits that even turning out in the club’s colours will be an honour."Back home in Dublin all us kids every wanted was Liverpool track-suits and jerseys at Christmas.

"Now at least I can get them for free at last! I can hardly believe I am sitting here now actually wearing a Liverpool track-suit for real."

And Keane reckons he can form a mouth-watering strike partnership with Fernando Torres next season.

He said: "Torres has been a revelation since he arrived in the Premier League and I am looking forward to playing alongside him.

"I had a great understanding and relationship with Dimitar (Berbatov) at Spurs, and hopefully I can do just the same with Torres. But it is up to me to get into the team and work hard to prove a partnership works.

"I hope myself and Fernando can have that sort of relationship and score plenty of goals.

"Now it is up to me to make sure I am picked every week, I am not naive enough to think I can walk into any team, that is my challenge.

"I am very excited with the prospect of playing alongside Torres. He is probably the best striker in the world.

"His first season in the Premier League was fantastic, and then to go to the Euro 2008 finals and score the winner in the final just made it an even greater season for him.

"It was a great year for him and hopefully with my help he can have another one just as good."

Keane, the Republic of Ireland’s record goal-scorer, is relishing joining a long line of Irish stars at Anfield.

He said: "It is good to follow a line of great Irish players at the club. John Aldridge was the last Irish striker here and he is a great pal of mine, he has always said he wanted to see me at Liverpool and now it has happened.

"He was a fantastic striker. And he has the respect of the people in Liverpool, if I can do as well as him I will be very pleased."

He added: "Playing Champions League football is important for me, but it is the whole package here. You don’t have to sell Liverpool to me, that happened many years ago.

"But this club has to challenge for the title, the fans expect it. And at this stage of my career I want to have that chance, and to win more trophies and medals.

"This squad can challenge for the Premier League, just look at the players the club already have. With a few more additions, which I believe will come, Liverpool can go on to win the title."

Keane will wear the famous number seven shirt, previously worn by Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish and Peter Beardsley.

He said: "It is no secret I am a massive Liverpool fan. This is a dream, and to wear the number seven jersey is an honour and a privilege.

"If I can do half as well as the likes of Dalglish and Keegan, then I will be more than happy.

"I have always wanted to play for the club and this is a great opportunity for me now and something I will relish. I would be happy to end my career here.

"Liverpool score a lot of goals, too, and it is my job is to score more.

"A striker is always judged on goals and that will be no different here."

These days, much is made of a player approaching 30.

But this is 2008. It's not like a 30 year old is in the twilight of their career anymore.

Medical technology, fitness, lifestyles, physical treatment, training etc...are all much more advanced and as such the careers of footballers will be greatly extended.

Giggsy is still going strong and he's 34.

We could get five good seasons from Robbie Keane.

I think the age factor is really more to do with re-sale value than how many years we will get out of him. He is 28 and on a 4 year contract, at the end of the contract he could walk away for free if he was 22 or 28.

The real problem with him being over 25, is that if he fails (which I don't think he will) we will be lucky to get £8million for him at 30 with a couple of poorer seasons behind him.

You also have to consider the contract policies of the mancs and Arsenal, where they only offer 1 year contract extensions to players over 30, Arsenal have lost a lot of their best players adhering to this policy.

David Villa 03/12/81
Robbie Keane 08/07/80

So Keane is already 28, Villa won't be 27 for a few more months yet. I'm not sure anyone really knows what Villa would have cost, I know given a straight choice I'd go for Villa - probably anything up to £5m more. The problem I can see with Keane over Villa is selling, I doubt we'll get anything like the fee we paid for Keane if we sell a la Bellamy. Villa's tag will hold reasonably for a season or two, especially after the Euros. So in that sense I reckon we've signed a player with a greater rate of depreciation

Well lets think positive instead of negative for once! :D
Perhaps Keane will play out his career at Anfield and we wont have to worry about the selling bit.I really dont see the point tbh.The guy has not even kicked a ball for us yet and you are worrying about what we will get if we sell him...Come on?

Just maybe he will be a major success and will give us 4 years in the number 7 that we will remember long after he's gone!
As for David Villa, its done and dusted now,he is not coming and thats it so theres no point whinging about it any more!
