I don't like him , he's very arrogant . I don't think he and torres would link up well , both have an eye for goal and might and will get in each other's way , too similar playing pattern , both like to dribble , both a quick and poachers . I'd pick torres any day over tevez

Barca rumours rebuffed by Benitez

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez insists he is edging closer to completing the permanent signing of Javier Mascherano despite fresh reports linking the Argentinian with a move elsewhere.

Mascherano had expected his move to be wrapped up by the end of last week but with the situation still ongoing, Spanish daily Marca now claims the player has been offered to Barcelona.

However, Benitez insists Liverpool's talks over a permanent deal for the former West Ham midfielder have progressed.

Confident
"We are closer than we were one week ago but I don't know how close," said Benitez.

Benitez is considering taking a legal action against a Sunday newspaper after an article referring to his relationship with the club's American owners was published last week.

The Spaniard confirmed he is studying the possibility of issuing legal action.

"You don't like doing these things but sometimes you have got to protect yourself, and the lawyer will be in contact with them and we will see what is the situation," added Benitez.

"You can have your own opinion, but when somebody is twisting things you must say stop. Our lawyer must say, listen, for these reasons we think you need to say something and change your approach."

Injury worry
Meanwhile, recent signing Martin Skrtel is a major doubt for Saturday's FA Cup clash with Barnsley after he picked up a calf injury in training.

The news comes as a blow to Benitez, who will now have to decide whether to risk Sami Hyypia ahead of Liverpool's clash with Internazionale in the UEFA Champions League next Tuesday.

With Daniel Agger still recovering from a metatarsal injury, it could also mean a place in the squad for Spanish youngster Mikel San Jose, who was on the bench at Chelsea on Sunday.

Does exist up there when it comes to Court Justice the right for honour? According to what Rafa said, and I could read the manipulation was evident. In my country if a paper is got caught lying and is shown in justice they're forced to rectify and backtrack publicly. And this one was a blatant manipulation.

The smart money is on Alonso and Reina to leave at the end of the season Sabre. Hopefully it is a load of rubbish but the rumour as been flying round for a couple of weeks now. Masch and Agger were also included in the rumour but not under quite the same circumstances.

THERE is no doubt about it, £18.6m is a hell of a lot of money.

But when that amount is enough to buy you one of the best players in his position in the world, surely it is not too much?

Javier Mascherano’s worth to Liverpool has been debated ever since the fee that the club will have to pay became common knowledge.

According to the old adage, you only get what you pay for and when Liverpool do finally complete the signing they will be getting a lot of bang for their buck.

Against Chelsea last week Mascherano totally overshadowed Claude Makelele, the player who has been pivotal to success at Real Madrid, Chelsea and France over the last decade.

Anyone who doubts whether Mascherano is worth £18.6m should ask themselves a simple question – could Michael Carrick or Owen Hargreaves (who both cost similar amounts) do the same?

The Alonso rumour I can believe, he's been getting worse every season instead of better imo. But Reina?? I think he's in the top half a dozen keepers in the world and we'd be fools to let him go.

Even if Benitez goes at the end of the season, I can't see a mass exodus of the Spanish players.

I agree John, he's a cracking keeper. I don't think he will leave because we want him to go, but maybe because he has decided he wants to go.

There are a lot of rumours about dressing room problems, homesickness, and "deals already made" flying about. Probably nothing in them but it always makes me uneasy. When I read that the Carson deal was almost sure to be off, and Villa were now looking for another keeper, it just added to my concerns.

Really hope there's nothing in that.

I also hope Carson stays at Villa. I just don't rate the lad. He can be very good on his day and is a decent shot stopper, but I think his decision making and concentration can be terrible at times. That may partly be due to his age, but I wouldn't be in favour of him being our number 1 next season. Also to be fair to him, we can't loan him out season after season and I think we should let him go this summer.

Aston Villa to return for goalkeeper

Aston Villa Football Club are to renew their interest in Brad Guzan at the end of the season.

Martin O'Neill tried to sign the Chivas USA goalkeeper in January yet the £2.3million transfer had to be scrapped when the Home Office denied the 23-year-old a work permit to play in England.

"We wanted to try and get Brad Guzan in because I believe he has got really good ability," O'Neill told the Birmingham Mail. "He wanted to come to Aston Villa, which was really encouraging.

"But his appeal for a work permit was turned down. They do not tell you why; six people sit in on it and take a vote. I am certainly going to have as look at it again in the future.

"If you are talking about the keepers that America has produced then he is in line with those."
