I wasnt being sarcastic. Judging from comments from Masch and his agent its obvious the club havent made a permanent move for him and if DIC really are out of the picture Rafa will surley get the boot come the end of season.

I read part of the refinancing deal allows £45Mil for players so surley we could use some of that to buy Masch.

As much as I like Mascherano, I think that maybe this is for the best.  I mean we should be looking at improving other areas such as the wide positions and in front.  And I just don't think that he'd really progress a whole lot as a footballer in the premier league, he'd be much better off in a slower league like La Liga or Seria A.

Wrong,wrong,wrong!

This player has the potential to be as good as Makalele has been, hes the same sort of player. To show the class he has shown so quickly for us and so young is rare.He plays with experiece way above his years, just how good will he be in another 2or3 seasons?

I dont see the problem in signing him,if Juve give us £8mill for Sissoko we should pay that off Masch! The company that 'own' Mascherano will accept the £17m in 4 installments...so wheres the problem?

If we let Mascherano slip through our fingers LFC will live to regret it.And if we can get £8m for Sissoko it makes £17m for Masch look a bargain, hes ten times the player already than Momo will ever be!

What planet have you been on??

He does want to stay,he has repeatadly said so!
The problem is the Yanks have not financed the deal...Why do you think Rafa came out and said he did a while back?

He sees Mascherano's potential and wants him bigtime, you cant blame the player for getting itchy feet when he is uncertain that the yanks will buy him,the lad needs to play somewhere he feels secure!

We need to hope that the money we get for Sissoko is going to be put down on Mascherano, hope that the yanks have told Raffa to sell someone and they will come up with the rest!

Mascherano to be owners' gift to Liverpool fans
By Steve Wilson

Troubled Liverpool owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett will attempt to appease angry Liverpool supporters by sanctioning the £17 million purchase of Argentine Javier Mascherano.

The midfielder is free to talk to potential new clubs from February 1 and fears had mounted at Anfield that protracted attempts by the American owners to refinance loans taken out to purchase the club last year, as well as fund a proposed new stadium, would lead to the player leaving Anfield.

However, with Hicks and Gillett hopeful that a resolution to their ongoing financial difficulties can be announced either today or Monday, the pair are set to use the permanent signing of Mascherano as an olive branch to supporters who have turned on them in recent weeks.

Mascherano, who has become a pivotal figure in Liverpool's midfield since his loan signing from West Ham last summer, wants to stay at Liverpool but has expressed his frustration that no formal offer has been tabled.

Mascherano is 50 per cent owned by Businessman Kia Joorabchain's investment company MSI and his complicated contract, which expires at the end of the season, contains a £17 million buy out clause.

Mascherano has repeatedly asserted that he would welcome a bid from Liverpool and is enjoying his football at the club, recently telling an Argentinian radio station: " I would love to stay here. I have tried and I've adapted to the city very well."

However, his agent Walter Tamer has shown less patience with Liverpool and has been touting his client around a host of major European clubs, with Juventus emerging as the most likely should Liverpool continue to delay.

"Liverpool have not made any offer at all to buy Javier," he said, "and he is likely to go to Italy next season."

Barcelona and Manchester City have also been suggested as possible destinations for the player whom Gillett refused to sanction the outright purchase off last summer.

However, with their standing with Liverpool fans at a new low after Hicks admitted publicly that Jurgen Klinsmann had been lined up to replace Rafael Benitez and the ongoing uncertainty over the popular manager's future, the co-owners are believed to have had a change of heart.

Momo Sissoko, whose first team opportunities have been restricted since the arrival of Mascherano a year ago, is likely to be sold to Juventus to raise part of the money needed to finance the Mascherano deal.

what a load of s hi te! an olive branch? Either this journalist or Gillett and Hicks think we are stupid.
If Mascherano is left to leave it would be a disgrace. I hope its just his agent upping the ante to get the club to sign him.
