atletico are not a poor team... they are one of the strongest sides in spain.... their squad is probably amongst the best 5 or 6 in the league...
they are a big club...they have some top players like: Antonio Lopez - Mista - Maxi rodriguez - Martin Petrov - Maniche - Perea -Aguero and torres... they have been performing way below expectations for quite a few years now... but the quality they have in their squad is impsseive... very promising prospects and some established international players wwho performed brilliantly for their national sides at top competitions ... calling them a poor team is just not right !

EDIT:

their 2 strikers.. 2 wingers...and one of their fullbacks would walk into our 1st team (aguero-torres-petrov-maxi-a.lopez) thats 5 players !

No player walks straight into another team, that just demonstrates the type of championship manager-esque analysis you show all too often.

They may be quality players, but suited to our league, our country and our style of play is another question all together.

Aguero is 18, an inexperienced barely proven player with quality but how would he walk into our team? Petrov is decent - nothing special - I consider Riise a much more adept winger for us than him.

It's just an appraisal from a numpty who supports Real Madrid and who has no consideration for suitability or adaptability.

Wernt we linked with Aguero before he opted for AM? Hes still a kid I think.

I doubt he would walk right into out team. Christ this is Liverpool your talking about. Hes a talanted player and one maybe for the future but I dont think hed fit right in the 1st team. Hes small and lightweight. I dont even think he could hack it physically over here to be honest.

did you ever see petrov play ? how about aguero ? antonio lopez...im sure uv watched the world cup... havent you ? liverpool werent in it... oh sorry... back to youtube and wikipedia ! doesnt rafa have anything to say about those players ? funny i dont see any rafa quotes....

You're a joke of football fan, you go by the appraisal of this player would walk into that team. Well, by that appraisal, surely if 5 Athletico madrid players would walk straigh into our team, they should be reaching European cup finals and coming third in La Liga by now!!!! :laugh:

he is very young i agee but is very talented and has played almost 100 top division league games so far !
one of the brightest prospects in world football today...
i agree he might take some time to settle but many players make the first team at 19 years of age (messi, fabregas....to name a few)

he might take some time to settle... but he -sooner or later- would make the first team as he has more ability at 19 than does crouch-voronin or even kuyt for all that matters !

Its a team game. The important thing is that we have a team that can do the right things at the right times. Do you think Greece had a team of Zidanes when they wont the European Championship? Look what our team work done to Messi and co last season.

I agree Augero does look impressive and I was really hoping we would sign him when all that talk was about. But hes young and a player like that isnt going to stay with AM forever. Give him a year or 2 and a big team will pick him up. Its nice to know what when that time comes we should be able to afford him.

Anyway back to Torres im looking forward to seeing him play for us. I admit after Morientes I have always been hesitant to say go for this or that player but if Rafa thinks this is the guy to get then let him get him.

by the same tocken, we were underdogs against barcelona... manutd won the league...we ended up 20points behind manutd !

actually i wouldnt sign aguero now either was just tryin to point out thatatletico arent as poor a club as some make them out to be... its not as if he was playing for a pss poor team "dragging them" on his own as some suggested... he was surrounded with quality and SHOULD have scored more just as atletico SHOULD have made it to the top 5 imo...

about torres.... i think he'll make quite the impact next season.. high expectations here and to me, hes more suited to the english style of play than morientes was (expected more from him too) because he simply has moreto his game than morientes did... hes fast and is a good dribbler... guess you can best compare him to t.henry with the difference of quality ofcourse... but similar players when on the ball going at defenders !

Torres?? i don't know ,think we could do better ,not doubt he is a quality striker in the spanish league ,but i thought we were aiming at the highest class ,kinda like Eto.

We were aiming for the best striker on the market this summer who would consider playing for us. That rules out Eto'o (not on the market), Villa (not on the market) and Henri (wouldn't play for us). To my mind, that leaves Torres and Tevez as the best available at the moment. I'll be pleased if we sign one of them and ecstatic if we somehow manage to sign both.

With Athletico signing Forlan, Torres is pretty much a done deal, since the fee has been arranged, just not publiclly announced and Torres is desperate to sign. Now we have to look at other possibilities for us. If the rumours are true and we had 40 mill to spend, 27 gone on Torres that leaves us 13 mill to bring in another player. I think a decent left back would be ideal--Matty Taylor I'd still like us to sign.

I think people should make up their minds after seeing Torres in a red shirt for a full season, rather than jumping the gun.

He might fit so snuggly into our game plan, bang goals away for laughs, and every hater in here would have to do a complete 180.

Then again he might fail completely, not fit in, never settle, and do a Morientes.

But let's give the lad the benefit of the doubt, he's yet to wear our shirt.

Two questions:

1) How long are you prepared to wait for Torres to score 20-30 goals for us?

Keep in mind, Drogba scored 16 goals in his first two seasons with Chelsea in all competitions before notching 33 this year. Point is, if you expect him to score that many straight away, you might be in for a frustrating season. More importantly, if he doesn't score that many this season it doesn't mean he'll never do the business for us.

2) How often does the money ever truly match the player?

In the current transfer market--especially at the top end, where we're talking the big names (and that would include Torres)--the values placed on players are often grossly over-inflated. Teams slap a huge price tag on their biggest players to discourage getting their stars poached and to give them the capital to buy an equally over-priced replacement should they in fact lose their star. Point is, if you insist on evaluating Torres in relation to his transfer fee, you're again bound to be disappointed. It may be wiser to chalk the fee up to the price of doing business these days and go about evaluating Torres entirely on what he contributes to the team, whether he cost 26.5 quid or 26.5 million quid.

You make a good point about drogba there, he didnt do the business in the first two seasons. I suppose I cant expect him to hit the ground running, As long as he shows through his performances that he is a constant goal threat and has the skills we are lacking upfront (pace + finishing in one player) then great, but in his second season for the price we have paid anything less that 20 league goals would be bad.

2) How often does the money ever truly match the player?

This is my problem with the transfer fee and part of the point I was making, paying "stupid money" for players, especially unproven premiership player is a big gamble. When you look at somebody like Beni Mcarthy who came as a small rep. player but still banged in 17 or 18 league goals for a club like blackburn (not saying he will do the same this season) It does put the Torres transfer fee in perspective.

Dont get me wrong I think Torres will be a great player for us, and a fan favourate maybe even my favourate player, but I have mixed feelings about the money paid thats all im concered about. I hope I will look at this post in 6 or 7 months and wonder what I was worried about

we will have more than 13 million left to spend...

we will get money back on bellemy, and cisse...

we could have about 25 million left to spend...

if it was up to me, a left winger would be next.
