Ok I said 10 plus goals. Lets say Torres gets 12 league goals in his 1st season the same as Kuyt. Would you see that as a flop and a waste of money?

Not if he performs well and more importantly is part of a winning side, it  depends how well everyone does really, if we win the league his 12 goals would be seen as crushal if we come fouth his 12 goals would get at least some of the blame.

if this deal goes through and if we did pay a club record fee of like 25-27 mil for torres it'll be like a double-edged sword for rafa... on one hand it shows that the new owners are matching his ambition giving financial support... on the other hand he will be judged severely if he doesn't deliver... to the owners rafa will not have any excuses if he fails to deliver...

Very true. In Rafa words he would like more time than more money' you can kinda see that in all the signings he's made for the youth team. But with another 4th or 3rd place finish how long will he get?

by the sounds of things on sky sports we are offering garcia in part exchange as well
as for 12 goals is it a flop? kuyt got that many and you lot sing his praises high enough but 12 goals for around 10 mill isnt bad, 12 goals for 27mill is a disgrace. so 27 mill is just another case of Liverpool spending over the odds for players

4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

We are thinking of smashing our transfer record to bring in a young talented striker, and to read most of the posts, its as if we were selling our best player not buying a (hopefully) great player.

Have a bit of faith (and patience) and I am sure he will be a great success.

If not we can always loan him out  :(

Saint completely understand what you're saying but we have heard it a lot. The "have faith" message--Cisse, Cheyrou, Diouf, Dundee, Meijer, Morientes, Nunez, Gonzalez, Bellamy and the legend that is Igor Biscan.

But I am in complete agreement Saint, we need to give Torres a chance before making a judgement, who knows he may take to the Prem like a duck to water. If he turns out to score 25+ goals, nobody will be having a pop at him then. Give him a chance.

'obviously it's a big gamble and should it go ahead it will NO DOUBT make or break Rafa's future at the club.'

Spot on Scottbot. I've been thinking this for a few days, and was worried about it at first. But the more i think about it the more i like that idea. It ramps up the pressure on Rafa to deliver, and with that money going on a striker, he's gonna have to shift the emphasis from cagey, controlled football with players chipping in goals from all over, and try and get more from his new, shiny £25m striker - not least cos the Yanks are gonna want to see a return on their money.

If anything,  Rafa's got away with it in the league the past 2 seasons. He hasn't really even sent out a statement of intent - we've been average, sometimes dismal, frequently negative. If we splash this money on Torres, I think he will have to throw a little more caution to the wind.

I'd be more excited about that than by actually seeing Torres in the side

Looks like they are already lining up a replacement for Torres, shouldn't be to long now as long as they sort this percentage fee out.

Atletico Madrid have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Villarreal's South American pair Diego Forlan and Juan Roman Riquelme.

Spanish daily AS claims a fee of up to 30million Euros (£21million) has been agreed between the two clubs, and if that's the case it will only increase speculation that Fernando Torres is about to leave the Vicente Calderon.

Forlan has been a big hit at El Madrigal since leaving Manchester United in the summer of 2004. He was top scorer in his first season in La Liga.

He was strongly linked with a move to Barcelona last summer, but the Catalan giants ended up signing Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen instead.

Forlan has a 23million Euro release clause in his Villarreal contract, and has been linked with Sunderland and Liverpool.

Riquelme meanwhile spent the second half of last season back in Argentina with his old club Boca Juniors on loan.

And AS claims Atletico must now persuade him to return to Spain.

Does anyone get the feeling that the signing of Torres will make or break Rafa's reign?

He's put so much effort in signing this player, that I feel the kid is going to have too much weight on his shoulders. I hope he's a smash here, but I get the feeling that if he flops, Rafa's standing with the fans and board might wane quite a bit.

torres is just one player...
i think our expectations are getting a bit unreal !
we are atleast 3 or 4 top class players away from being as good as Manutd or Chelsea..

as for 12 goals being a disgrace... come again ?!
if he can score 12 goals and make quite a few assists and looks good when is played and is always a threat i think 12 goals is a decent tally...
i dont see many complaining about the goals Kuyt scored but the main concern seems to be his style of play or rafa's tactics... point is... he is -more often than not- getting involved in build up play when he should be in the box waiting for a cross or tapping in simple finishes...

sining torres to make or break rafa ?.... i dont think so... unless he is given 50 or 60mill or so to improve the squad....i dont think anyone can blame rafa for not winning the league... the difference in quality is obvious !

p.s: if next season is anywhere near as bad as last season... i think that is what might break rafa.. we SHOULD improve but just cant see us challenging for the title with the squad we have !

I think if Rafa is given 50 million to spend, and there is no improvement in the league table, then I think we need to think about things seriously.
