I wish we brought Owen. He's one of the best finishers I've seen. You can lose pace if you like, but not that natural ability to score. In Newcastle he's been unlicky with injuries, but, that's what the doctors of Liverpool are paid for, they should examine the player and buy him if he's able to play, because he's class.

TBH we were lucky Newcastle outpriced us a while back,imagine all the hype of having Owen back only for him sidelined for us like he was at Newcastle...it would have been a real kick in the teeth.

As for having him back now,i think it would be a gamble after such a serious injury and would not be surprised to see him out again this season with a re-occurance.He has injury prone written all over him.

There is no doubt that Owen is and always will be a red legend but the fact is he's history now and should stay just that!

Atleti hint at life after Torres

Atletico Madrid have given their clearest indication that Fernando Torres could leave the club and that Diego Forlan could be his replacement.

With Liverpool said to have made their interest in the highly-rated striker known, the Spanish club are now playing a waiting game.

Atletico official Miguel Angel Gil Marin admitted he was aware of The Reds' desire to sign Torres and said that one of his jobs this summer could be to look for a replacement.

"Nobody is essential," Gil Marin told Punto Radio.

"We are trying to build a team to compete and it is not about any one player and, good though he is, we want a squad that achieves its ambitions.

"Atletico is creating a side that is not all about Torres, but about the team itself.

"I would love Fernando to stay, but it is Fernando himself who will decide his future.

"We have talked to him and told him that he is in our plans. It is normal that he has doubts.

"It is also normal that there are offers that has caused him to stop and think.

"Things in football can change at any time and, although I do not see anything happening yet, I have to continue to work on looking for alternatives in case all this talk becomes a reality."

Despite all the rumours, Gil Marin holds out hope that Torres will reject Liverpool's overtures and commit himself to the club where he came through the youth ranks.

However, the approach to sign Forlan from Villarreal will continue even if Torres stays, according to Gil Martin.

"The deal that we are trying to do for Forlan is to give Fernando a partner in attack, but it may also be to use him as his replacement," Gil Marin said.

"Torres knows that he is wanted at Atletico and, as far as I know, he wants to stay."

After a meeting with his club and agent, it is believed that Forlan has decided to snub potential interest from the Premier League to remain in Spain.

Aston Villa and Sunderland have both been linked with the former Manchester United forward.

the main question i ask myself about torres is this.......

"would i be pisssed off if man utd  brought him"

and the answer would be yes, because you just know he will end up like christiano ronaldo, hes that type of player.

To be fair to Sabre he is only giving his opinion, I hope he's wrong if we sign Torres (I am sure Sabre does too). I don't expect Torres to be our main striker, I am hoping that Benitez sees him more as the creative second striker that we have sorely missed, with Kuyt played further forward getting the bulk of the goals. Certainly from his previous goal record to have him as our main striker would be a gamble. 15 goals a season (inc pens) is certainly not prolific.

Exactly what i am hoping he is used as, the link between midfield and attack. With his dribbling skills to open up space for the other forwards.

Thanks S@int, if I'm wrong I'll be happy. In my view it's better to be surprised for good, than be dissapointed later!!

As for redtrader, that "link between midfield and strikers" is a job that Torres can do... If he's taught to do a couple of dribblings less, he abuses a bit the pace he has, and he would be much of a better player if he didn't have the weight of "having to make somthing because I'm the star" in his back.

That "link" is what we call to play "between lines". A footie english question, is that what you call "to play in the hole?" I sometimes read it on the forum, but not sure exactly what it means.

Maybe, on second thought, it will be good for Torres to play in  a team in which he'll be just one more guy in the team... maybe Rafa has plans for him, if he comes not as a star, but as the "replacement of the attributes of Bellamy" then we might have a hell of a player. If we bring him as the new Henry though... I just hope Rafa's honest with the role he'll have.

That's what they've been doing until now. Making a team for Torres, and it's 7 years without playing in Europe. If you work for a striker, and your striker doesn't deliver... well.

BUT. If Torres is removed the weight of a team that works for him, and he is used in another manner, he could surprise me. Rafa will know what to do with his good pace, good dribbling, and good skill for sure.

Hopefully we are not just getting torres,cause I have a feeling his going to be another kuyt,not an owen replacement..I am keeping my fingers crossed for tevez,eto,or villas to join us before the season starts as well..at the expense of a winger Im ok with that..Im nutz already..

MADRID, June 27 (Reuters) - Atletico Madrid said on Wednesday it is up to Spain striker Fernando Torres to decide where he wants to play next season as media reports continue to link him with a move to Champions League finalists Liverpool.

'I would love him to stay with us but it is up to Fernando to decide his future. We have spoken to him and told him we want him to stay,' Atletico's majority shareholder Miguel Angel Gil told Punto Radio on Wednesday.

'It's normal that the offers and the people around him make him think and give him doubts. His idea is to continue, but in football things move quickly and I can't predict a change in opinion.

'My obligation is to fight for what is best for Atletico and to work on alternatives in case these siren sounds turn to reality. No one is indispensable.'

The 23-year-old club captain, and top scorer over the last five seasons, has a contract with Atletico until 2009, but has become one of the hottest transfer targets in Europe this summer.

Rumours have continued unabated since Atletico failed to win a direct route into European competition for this coming season. They finished seventh in the season just ended and will compete in the Intertoto Cup next month with the aim of reaching the UEFA Cup.

The Madrid club struggled to score goals last season and Gil admitted Villarreal's Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan was a prime target.

'The deal we are trying to close with Forlan is to find a partner for Torres, or if he goes, an alternative,' Gil added.

'Torres knows we want him to stay, and if he wants to, he will.'

Torres, a lifelong Atletico fan, is on holiday and scheduled to return for the club's pre-season on July 9.

Sabre i'm not being specific to Torres it's every spanish player we asa club are linked with, doesn't it drive you mad? your opinions are just that,Opinions.

I have no idea if Torres is a good idea or a bad idea i just think as a board sometimes we are to negative about every thing LFC.

Well it looks like we can say it is more than just specualtion now and there is certainly too much smoke for there to be no fire. I haven't completely made my mind up about the lad yet because i simply haven't seen enough of him. I agree that everyone is probably taking Sabre's opinion as if it were the gospel truth and let's not forget Sabre was (and possibly still is) a big fan of Gonazalez!!!    Also if we sign Torres and he plays a blinder he'll never hear the end of it!

My impressions of the player are this - He's quick and mobile, has a few tricks in his locker, is two-footed, is quite strong on the ball and from what i saw at the World Cup he is able to strike up a good understanding with his strike partner. His best quality for me would be the energy, enthusiasm and trickery he could bring to the team. His record says he isn't the most prolific but i would also point out that David Villa (a player everyone would love to see here) has only scored one more goal than Torres in La Liga this year.

A few people have suggested this kid should come in and play as 2nd striker with Kuyt pushed further forward. That would be folly in my book, it was clear last year that we missed a player who could offer a threat in behind, stretch the pitch and give Gerrard and Alonso another option instead of player in to feet all the time. Kuyt isn't and never will be the the player to do that although i would also like to see him play a bit further up the pitch. Rafa obviously thinks Torres is the answer and obviously it's a big gamble and should it go ahead it will NO DOUBT make or break Rafa's future at the club.

Mate, we've discussed this point before but it's such an important thing to repeat: a lot of our future satisfaction or disappointment depends on what level of expectation we have about Torres when (if?) he signs.

If we expect him to absolutely take the league by storm from the off and net us 20-25 goals we are setting ourselves up for disappointment (the same would be true of Tevez by the way).

If, however, we see him as a quality young prospect and accomplished Spanish international who undoubtedly makes our strike force stronger then we'll probably be more accepting if it takes him time to settle into the league and if he only ends up scoring around 12-15 goals.

The danger, of course, will be to continually evaluate him in terms of his transfer fee--an evaluation that will more than likely cast a cloud over the lad given the fact that 25 (or so) million pounds is a lot of wonga.  It'll be worth remembering in the months ahead that Darren feckin' Bent was valued at around the 17 million mark by West Ham and that it is most certainly a seller's market when it comes to negotiating transfers for the world's most promising young players.

well...Torres is just brilliant ! at 23 i think hes one of the hottest prospects in europe at the moment... iv watched about 8 or 9 Athletico games this season...watched pretty much all the highlights after every week  !
I'd say most of the people slagging Torres off havnt actually seen him play... they just look at the records, and they see 14 goals a season and they decide well ...not good enough ! I said it in another thread but whenever iv seen him play, you just look at him go at defenders and take shots and bring payers into play and u think well....what would they do if they didnt have him ?! in ever game iv seen hi play...he looked like he was going to score atleast once given all the work he puts and chances he creates for himself !
He is -by quite some margin- better than anything we have at the moment... if he comes i think he'll be played as our main striker with one of Kuyt/Crouch doing all the linkup and second striker duties... he HAS better finishing than kuyt, and is an allround better player than Kuyt, crouch or bellamy will ever be imo!
From what i have seen, Torres is a forward capable of scoring 20+ goals a season.... he has pretty good finishing, very good dribbling and skills and is excellent with the ball to sum things up. His heading is better than anything we got aswell !
If we can get a left winger and play Gerrard in the center, i think both Torres and whoever it is played alongside him can score many many goals for us next season...
what i like most about Torres that pretty much all our strikers seem to lack is that directness he has to his game... He has pace and i think he will be a huge hit in the english league ! 27 mill sounds like alot of money, but given he's 23 and has all the attributes of a potential world class striker, i think hes a gamble liverpool should take in progressing to the next level !
milito is another player iv seen quite a bit of...iv seen him for argentina and for zaragoza he has good finishing but to say you'd take him over torres for the same price is just insane if you ask me ! hes nowhere near as good as torres in many aspects of his game and would be a bigger risk in the english league if u ask me...
owen...id take back any day of the week... 10 mill or even 20 mill...injury prone or not... owen is still one of the best strikers in world football and would be brilliant if liverpool can get him back...one of the few players we'v been linked to that i would rather have instead of torres !
