Owen - A dilemma?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stmichael » Wed Jun 09, 2004 12:47 pm

I don't want to start down the road of attacking Michael's commitment or his loyalty to Liverpool, for my own part I think that is beyond reproach, but I can't help but wonder if it is Liverpool's best interests to extend his contract by a solitary year. A new brush and all that, for a new manager, I think it would be over the top to expect too much next season and maybe he has his own ideas of who he wants to introduce up front and maybe do it in tandem with Michael's last year at the club.

Should he have a good euro 2004 tournament, however, he would still be classed as one of the most attractive buys around. A poor tournament and twelve months down the line in a team trying to establish its identity may very well see his value decline, especially if the depression in the market continues.

It's is difficult for me to see what is in it for Liverpool to extend his contract by a solitary year, unless plans are in place for his replacement. i don't think that either of Baros or Pongolle are anywhere near ready, with Heskey gone and Cisse not arrived yet, it does leave us exposed, at best.

I know itis difficult for the club given Michael's standing, and the fact that he has insisted he will not leave on a Bosman, but it is a time when difficult decisions have to be made, a one year extention to his current deal will inevitably lead to increased media speculation in the months ahead, speculation that will not be helpful to the new manager, new players or even existing players. Resentment among fans has often come to the fore when Michael's contract has been discussed, I can't help but feel that both the club and Michael are making the 'best' of a situation neither is happy with.

I'm far from convinced that this is the best way to handle things, should it happen, I cannot help but feel it is an half-hearted move on both sides and something that is in neither's interest.

I hear what you are saying here St Mick, but I cant help thinking this is a glass half empty situation from you. (No offence so dont go pelting me with PM's like other people do).

Michael, in all honesty is (and it pains me to say this) too good for us right now. He is the kind of player who with the right service would easily net 25 (and more) league goals every season. He makes scoring look like childs play. He did not receive the balon'dor for nothing after all.

If he decided that he wanted to play good football in a good team with good manager and staff, then I for one would wish him all the best. I would be sorry to see him go, but I would understand his reasons. All the guys I go the games with agree that "You couldn't blame him, we are shi*te".

Many fans have said he was not at the races most of the season, with some commenting he was thinking too much about the possibility of playing abroad. I dont think so. Every striker will have a lean spell over a few games, but he is class, and the best English striker right now (Shrek included).

Michael Owen lives and breaths LFC. Now before we get the usual "Owen was a blue nose" ******, I know. He has however been a Liverpool fan since he joined, and he knows as much as his skill and commitment has helped his career, he owes a lot to this club. That is why he wont hold it to ransom or leave it in the lurch.

Get it right;

He wont leave for nothing on a Bosman.

He is ambitious and wants to play the best players in the biggest games, so who could blame him.

He wishes he could win stuff at Liverpool, but if he doesn't think he can he will reconsider his position.

This proposed one year deal is the perfect solution to the problem. If he signs and we pick up then Michael can sign a long extension and win stuff with us.

If he signs and we are ******, Michael can look elswhere, and Liverpool can still command a fee for him.

Anyway I have said this before, and now I say it again.

Keegan was replaced by Dalglish.

Dalglish replaced by Rush.

Rush replaced bt Aldo.

Aldo replaced by Rush (again).

Rush replaced by Fowler.

Fowler replaced by Owen.

Owen replaced by ?

I was myself worried when each of them left, I thought my life was over when Keegan left, and had no idea how you could replace Dalglish, but life goes on.

Liverpool Football Club will go on and on and on and on and on (get the picture) and on and on and on.............
JUSTICE FOR THE 96

Michael wants to play for a top team. LIVERPOOL ARE NOT A TOP TEAM.

Gh ran the team into the ground and Michael is giving the new guy one year to show that the team can win trophies again. Remember, the club hasn't one a major trophy in 14 years.

***yawns*** FA Cup = biggest in the world?
Back here in my land, the league champions, champion league cup and UEFA cup are more major and important. But I can't deny how big it is in England.
But winning it all will be best!

Big Niall is spot on. Owen has been playing for a second rate team for too long. Worthington Cup? No one takes it seriously, apart from us. UEFA Cup? For teams who aren't good enough to play in the CL. The FA Cup is third in line behind the league and the European Cup. It's a nice one to win but a consolation only if we are not competing for the title.

United had an awful year. They came third in the league, 15 points ahead of us, qualified for the knockout stages of the CL losing to the winners, and won the FA Cup as a consolation. They played Arsenal three times, drawing twice and beating them once.

I wish our seasons were as bad as that. We'd regard that as a real achievement. Just shows how far we have fallen. We are top of the bottom 17, and a long way behind the top three. Our new manager has his work cut out.

IN fairness GH did not run Liverpool into the gound..... don't forget the 2001 season.. the only problem with GH is that he did not have the talent as a manager to bring the team on from there and because of that players and fans have become dis-enchanted. He made a mistake too in not keeping Anelka and Litmanen, the season after, imo and was unlucky in that Markus Babbel got the disease and a World Class defender (that he brought in on a free) was taken form us. No Liverpool FC has stalled since 2001-2002 and everthing has become stagnated, hopefully a new manager with new ideas, and a few new players will bring us on again as a club

Babbel was a massive loss.

Babbel, Owen and Hyypia were our best players.

To lose one of them like we did set us back at least a year in my opinion.

I think too many people get carried away with the "treble". I know some of the younger fans who aren't used to any trophies were delighted to see us beat a division 1 team on penalties to win a cup Manu and Arsenal didn't properly enter.

We actually had a good season the season after, when we came second which people seem to forget.

The FA cup is nothing major, I remember Coventry, Wimbledon and Everton winning that. It is no bigger than any other countries cup. I mean a ****** Millwall team got to the final by beating a bunch of clubs from lower divisions - so what.

Owen is a class player and he will feel that he has spent half his career for a club that was on the up for a years but has now been on the slide and he still has to win a big medal. He has to be professional and if we don't show huge progress this year , he should make the decsion to go to a top team.

hate to agree, but stu is right.

Before his injury, Babble was a world class full back.  Consistent, professional and class.  It's sad he didn't recoup his form (how could he?) but i wish the guy luck and thank him for the season we had the Real Markus.

woof woof! just wondering how u got your silly name?

I personally dont think the Owen issue is such a big deal, he can easily be replaced. I say if he's worth 30 million then cash in on him, and buy 4/5 players with that money.
A lot of liverpool supporters think Owen is some sort of God, but having watched most of the Liverpool games at Anfield last year bar 2, then i can honestly say that Owen is often non existent for 60 mins, an Baros is a better all round striker, quicker and could be more prolific, given the chance.
Owen often sits on the defenders shoulder most of the game, and waits for the ball to come to him, which last season never chappened a lot, and didnt do a lot to create many chances like a Thierry henry would.
I reckon we've seen the best of him anyway.

I know some die hards will be in horror! these comments about their golden boy, but Liverpool FC will exist long after Michael Owen is dead and buried and is pushing up daisys.

Anyway, if he does go, wheres he gonna go to?
Madrid...Erm NOPE! Hes not better than Ronaldo or Raul.
Chelsea..Erm Nope! No History, and he can bargain that kind of money out of Lfc.
Where else?

Trust me, hes going nowhere
