Personally i like the player, never got his chance at Arsenal and i think they regret that..... Also off topic im happy that Carson has signed a new deal.

Although i don't really like Pennant, i think my reason for this is because when i've seen him play (i saw him play live twice last season) he's always been the main threat on the field (by the way this wasn't at Liverpool games- these were at other games i went to with friends). For Birmingham he was their main man, swapping sides, beating players and getting the the byline to provide crosses etc.

At the games, we gave him hell- but that's because he was an easy target (what with his electronic tag) and was by far their best player. As much as I'd like Alves, i think he'll be a good introduction to our side and will inject pace and skill down the right side. With him and Speedy swapping sides etc i think we'll have an excellent side with Crouch and Fowlers hold up play and Bellamy's pace! Definitely an improvement on last season!!

I'm not so sure. Alves is supposed to be a real professional, a family man with alot of integrity as well as a very good player. He has said he wanted to play for Liverpool (probably due to the fact that Raffa shares the same outlook as him) and he does not want to put any pressure on his club to sell him cheaply due to his loyalty to them.

He sounds like a great signing to me even at twelve million.

A twelve million sure thing is better than a six million plus gamble (unless it pays off of course :;):

.. except for the difference of £6million that we don't seem to have!!

FFS Ronalinho is first choice, but we have not signed him cus:

1) He will cost around £50m, so is over our valuation of the player, which is more like £20m.

2) His Chairman is not willing to let him go.

3) We dont have hte money to meet his clubs valuation of the player.

Therefore we go for someone who we can prise away, will not use all of our budget and who we beleive is priced reasonably in relation to his talent.

Agree 100% Leon. At the end of the day, paying £6m for an out and out right winger is good business in that it should leave us with enough funds left to get another striker in.

Can a man not change? He has made his mistakes and paid his dues. Rafa will have done his research and will know everything about Pennant. Asfar as I'm aware, he doesn't drink any more and that was the root cause of the lads problem.

Give the guy a break. If he starts whipping in crosses for Crouch to bury he will be a God in all supporters eyes.

Surey there is a reason why he was only worth six million, you still get what you pay for.

Fact is we have now signed him so let's hope he does the business for us. Yes everyone can change and deserves a chance.

Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant is reportedly undergoing a medical at Liverpool ahead of his proposed £6.2 million move to the Premiership side.

Widespread reports indicated on Wednesday morning that The Reds were close to tying up a deal for the former Arsenal man, and if Pennant passes the examination and agrees personal terms then he could fly out to join Rafa Benitez's side in Switzerland.

Blues boss Steve Bruce admitted on Tuesday that the Championship side had turned down a bid of £3.5 million for the player who first burst into the national consciousness when signing for Arsenal from Notts County in a record deal as a 15-year-old.

A subsequent offer of £6.2 million may have been enough to prise Pennant from St Andrews, and the 23-year-old will now join The Reds for pre-season training should he pass his medical at Melwood.

The winger could now make his debut for the club against German outfit Kaiserslautern on Saturday, whilst Benitez has also moved to secure the future of fellow wide-man Paul Anderson.

The 18-year-old, signed from Hull City in January, has impressed the Spanish boss during pre-season and has been rewarded with a new-four year contract at Anfield.

Anderson will now look to break into the first team picture under Benitez and joins goalkeeper Scott Carson in committing his future to the club.

Couldn't agree more Leon, some people on here really need to take a reality check! Surely we all realise there is no bottomless pit of cash for Rafa to spend!! :no

It appears to me that Rafa is proving just how high a quality manager he is by building as good a squad as possible with the funds available to him. I am surely not alone in my opinion that our squad has a far better equipped overall look this season with the new arrivals. I for one am very encouraged!!

Ability aside , how come a player that cost just over three million last season is now valued at more than double that ? Does playing for a team that gets relegated really improve your valuation that much ? :laugh:

I take your point about his value doubling in a season were he was relegated, but to be fair he was by far an away there outstanding performer and 6 million isnt exactly a ridiculous fee.
Comparing it with the Duff fee isnt realistic either imo, Duff is a 10 million player but obviously the money laundering ruski doesnt care about cutting major losses.
I think he will improve our squad a great deal and give the manager the chance to be more flexible with our best and most important player Gerrard.

Spot on. The £6m difference will go a long way towards securing the additional striker that Rafa's sniffing around for.

It's amazing how much more confident I feel about the new season knowing we have a natural right winger for the first time in an age. Even if there are no more signings, having delivery coming in on both sides will make a hell of a difference.

In all fairness Woof, if he signs for 6 million, then that is clearly what Rafa thinks he's worth. Sure, he had a chancy smaller offer turned down, but we all know that Rafa will only pay what he thinks a player is worth.

That being the case, RAFA chose NOT to buy Alves because he was overpriced, and CHOSE to buy Pennant because he believes he's good value at that money.

Let's hope Pennant shows more maturity by leaving his off-field problems outside Liverpool FC and deliver the way his talents have been promising his previous managers.

I'd second that Mike! Come on Woof lad, you know your stuff, you should know by Rafa's previous in the transfer market he's not one to have his hand forced. He would only pay the fee he truly believes the player is worth, and with all due respect, who are we to question him?
