France - Rubbish

It was no surprise to me that France were rubbish. They were in a terrible qualifying group with rubbish teams like Ireland, Israel and Switzerland and BARELY got through. They have big famous names and people go "oh Zidane....." but Zidane is cr*p now, so are many other old timers like Viera while Henry has never done it on any big stage.

Anyone who put money on them was blinded by fame/past achievements

it comes down to the fact that their manager is basically clueless. he makes sven look like rafa. :D

zidane can't be relied on to pull the strings anymore at his age, especially in that heat. vieira is a shadow of his former self. how barthez is number one keeper is beyond me. same for how guily was left out of the squad in favour of wiltord. and finally, henry is completely wasted in his role for the french team.

they've got no chance.

What I don't understand is how he can play Wiltord abovce Trezeguet.

It's like us dropping Owen for Danny Mills! :D

well well well, 1-1

We may well have seen the last of Zidane aswell after being booked he misses the last group game and france will probably go out.

The thing is France sat back at 1-0 and I think that will teach them a lesson. Their manager is clueless but France are not the same as they used to be.

The final group game is a must win for them.

Well, France have self-destructed again.  They let the Koreans back into the game and are now up against it in their group.  They were in shambles at the back in the last 10 minutes and Barthez was his usual erratic self.

Credit to the Koreans who showed great skill and heart to climb back into the game.

This result may be controversial, however.  It looked like France had scored a second goal in the first half off of a corner but the Korean keeper scooped it out and the linesman didn't give the goal.  It sure looked like the ball crossed the line, however.

Very interesting group, this! :D

Probably yes. That is probably the only outcome. If Togo forfeit the match then it will be counted as win for Switzerland.

It gets worse for France  :oh:

1-0 up playing well, but absolutely no incentive to kill the game. Ive absolutely no sympathy for teams that sit back and think one goal is enough.
Ive never seen a worse French team, or 11 players that are so laid back-evry one of them needs a goot boot up the backside.
The Gallas moment brightened a bad result. :D

Ever since the final whistle went in Paris in the world cup final of '98 there has been a massive aire of arrogance surrounding the french football team and it's players IMO. They win one world cup and then scrape a golden goal win against the italians in the euro championships and suddenly they are better than the brazilians and only need to turn up to win things. In the following couple of years you only had to see the way the likes of Desailly, Petit, Vieira and Barthez (to name just a few) were always speaking out on the low abilities of our leagues, or the players playing in them. Or how many of our players needed to go abroad if england wanted to win the world cup again. I believe they are getting a very good payback now for there undeserved arrogance as their team and ideas have stayed very much the same in the past 8 years since France '98. The world of football has moved on and have now started taking notice of the new emerging nations in world football. Had they not learn't from being beaten 4 years ago by Senegal or how well S.Korea did before they played them tonight? It is becoming a a recurring theme IMO throughout football nowadays that you can't expect so-called lesser teams to be easy prey; which france obviously did tonight. We saw it all season in the premiership with Wigan and West Ham who both did well beyond anything expected of them at the start of the season.

France and anybody who takes their philosophy and approach to football are fast becoming footballing dinosaurs that are themselves going to become minnows in football. :buttrock

Good point, mate.  South Korea did reach the semi-finals in the last World Cup, after all, and that was not just because they were one of the hosts.  They are quick, skillful, tenacious and well-organized.  In fact, I thought that they were good value for a shock winner after equalizing.

This French team is a shadow of their former selves--trouble is, the same players are still on the pitch!  After they crash out at the group stages again, they'll want to take a lesson from Argentina.  Overshadowed in the last few World Cups after the glory years, they went back to the drawing board, invested in developing their youth team and have now groomed a senior team that has been playing together for many years and has had remarkable success as a unit.

Based on these French performances I think that we should cheekily market Cisse to Lyon and Marseille as the missing lynchpin whose absence led to France's poor showing!  Who knows, they might start a bidding war after all!   :D
