United are a big club and I suppose if you take into account both Liverpool's and Man Utd's successes from 1990 to 2006 (so far) than you could well say that United were the bigger club but on the same token from 2000 to 2006 Liverpool have been more successful.
So your claim holds no weight as you can select any period of time and say that club's bigger or better, if you were to go back over 100 years than you will find that Liverpool have been overall more successful than United in terms of trophies.
Now if you are talking in terms of revenue than yes United are no doubt, richer and have a larger stadium but that's what happens when you sell out from being a football club to being a PLC/brand like United have done.
At the end of it all you are only a big club if you have a trophy cabinet worthy of recognition. If you went by revenue and stadium size, than the likes of Manchester City and Aston Villa would be regarded as big clubs when they are nothing more than middle of the road sides.
