I pretty much agree word for word with what John Craig wrote, jeez i could've written the same post. Far too gung-ho when you are only 1-0 down. 0-0 with ten minutes to go would have been OK, all set up for a barnstorming finish.

On a totally seperate note, I really hope Barcelona go on and win it now. They are the best team, play fantastic stuff the right way and the game of football will be richer if they triumph.

Great game last night, you guys really played a great game (I almost had a nervous breakdown :D)
and only a huge performance by Benfica's defense mixed with tons of luck saved our net. It's good to see Benfica up there once again. :)

Wish you the best of luck and lots of success.

Well said Ciggy, I agree wiv everything you say.  How can he play Morientes from the off in such an important match when he hasn't scored in what...18 matches!!!!!

Each post match interview now you can guarantee the stock answer is "we created chances".  Well EFFIN great but chances don't win games Mr Benitez if you don't convert them and Morientes couldn't convert if he wanted to, his heart's not in it!!  I am sick of hearing about his past and how good he WAS but Cisse was top scorer in France before we bought him and now look, but at least he has bagged some goals since he arrived though I am not his biggest fan.  Crouch does hold the ball up well but he's in a forward position and we need him to be scorin aswell.

When will Garcia learn that he is not Ronaldinho and pack in tryin to showboat, Mr Garcia you have to learn to have a good first touch control of the ball and pass the ball acurately before you can think about showboatin!!!!!

I'm still convinced Owen is comin back in the summer, but I don't think the partnership wiv fowler will be the same. We need a world class goal scorer (or two) and get rid of Morientes, Cisse, Garcia and loan Crouch out for a season abroad. :veryangry

get riod of garcia?
loan crouch abroad?

are u sure mate?
garcia can still change a game but this type of game was never suited to him. and why loan out crouch exactly?

Postby Ola Mr Benitez » Thu Mar 09, 2006 11:46 am

I think the best team won over the 2 legs.. unfortunately...  They defended well and took their chances home and away.  If we had played like that we would be exstatic.

People keep saying we create loads of chances, but I'm not sure that we do.  We have loads of possesion but realitically their keeper had hardly anything to do.  He made a brilliant save from Alonso in the 2nd half, but that was about it.

Our improvement under Raffa Benitez has been amazing, but we are still a team which is in development.  When you consider this, and the fact we are fighting for 2nd in the Premiership and still in the FA Cup and made the knock out stages of the Champions League, you have to think we are doing ok.

Unfortuantely, none of our strikers are good enough.  That includes Robbie Fowler.  For me Peter Crouch does a great job, but I would be surprised if he ever scores more than 10 - 15 goals a season in all competitions.  However if he plays with an out and out goalscorer, I think a great partnership could be acheived.  The question is who is that player and how much will he cost us?

All in all its been disappointing, but we are getting stronger and improving all the time.

Congratulations Benfica, you did a good job!

Owen is not the answer either he is a year older now, has got another injury as well as the broken toe.
Wouldnt be much point in signing an injury ridden striker it would be no benifit for us.
I would like Dirk Kuyt personally but his price will treble after the WC missed out on him big time, should have paid the 10 million at the time.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

I agree, I don't think he is, but I think a deal was done between Owen and Lpool last year when Rick Parry and Rafa had talks with him just b4 he had talks with Newcastle and that is for him to come to Anfield this summer.  I don't believe there was any intention of signing him last year.

It just p*sses me off that Rafa cannot see what 100,000s of Reds fans see and that is that Morientes is totally sh*t.  He has no vision, no class, no shooting feet!

Can someone please explain a few things for me.
1. When Morientes arrived, we were told he was very good at scoring with his head.  We then had Crouch, again for his height to give us dominance in the air.  Why couldn't we then have a forward who is good with his feet instead?
2. Why play Cisse wide on the right, where he obviously looks out of place, instead of in the middle up front?
3.  Why mess around with the forwards with each match so that partnerships are not able to be "fine-tuned"?
4.  Why is Traore still playing for a professional team?
5.  Why do I feel so pi**ed off?  :(

Postby Redman in wales » Thu Mar 09, 2006 1:15 pm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/l/liverpool/4781950.stm

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez blamed his defenders rather than strikers for their Champions League exit after a 2-0 defeat to Benfica, 3-0 on aggregate.
"We started well, made chances and then made a bad mistake and conceded a goal. After that, the game changed," he said.

"But I will not blame my strikers. Mistakes were made at the back and that is why we lost.

...aparrently rafa thinks we can win in europe without any goals from strikers. 21 chances no goals, yet conceed and thats it... its the defenders fault why we lost!!  ???  ???
