No disrespect to France, but it does not take a very special player to be a top scorer there because there as even the best French players ply their trade outside France and the French league has been a good breeding ground for foreign players who largely coma from former French colonies like the African continent.
The French league would help develop more tactical awareness for these players but they would still lack that extra 5% or so high-end skills of the top players in other top leagues and also the French based players would be relatively ill-equipped to thrive in the hustle and bustle of the English game. An exception is Pires who came directly from France but he has sublime skills and he has the benefit of having compatriots at Arsenal who are not only world class, but also helped him to settle down at Arsenal.
Perhaps this is why Liverpool's French based imports have largely failed...

I make a point of watching players we are interested in for whole matches and it is a lot different from the highlights. Cisse recently scored in the last minute against Strasbourg for a 2-0 win. Other than the goal he looked like a lazy grandstander. If you were tojust look at the highlights then no doubt you could make him out to be great. The French league is "Nationwide".
As far as African players are concerned anyone who watched the African Cup will know that they are miles behind the rest of the world. For 90% of the continent team games come second to individual performances and this shows in their play. The half decent ones in the premiership are here as mercenaries and will walk away as soon as it suits (see the Jay Jay interview after the Carling Cup final). Give me a player who plays for his heart above the fat wallet crew anyday.
