Alonso is a deep lying play maker. He's not an out an out attacking midfielder. Ballack or Parker or someone with drive and attacking intent is a MUST is Gerrard leaves. Baraja would be good.

Makelele will be going nowhere next season.

                            Cech

Ferrira Terry Gallas(Carvalho) New Left Back

                         Makelele
              Gerrard              Lampard
    Joaquin                                    Robben

                          Drogba(or new striker, possibly Adriano)

Duff won’t be in the first team next year when everyone is fit, but I am sure they will rotate, though he may eventually get fed up, then maybe he will be real possibility for us.

If Gerrard is to leave we do need to find someone really good to replace him. I think Ballack would be fantastic, but I don’t know how realistic it is. He and Alonso would be a phenomenal partnership.

Supporting LFC isn't about blinkeredness towards the possibilities. Gerrard could well leave (I hope to God he doesn't), but from what your saying, we shouldn't even debate on which players we would like to have as replacements. I personally believe that if he goes, we would have enough dosh to get Aimar(£5m), Ballack(£10m), Baraja(£5m), Mintal(£4m) and a CB(£6-8m). Now that, together with Alonso, Garcia and Hamann, means we would effectively have 7 top class MF's vying for 4 spots. Possibilities, my friend. Not necessarily hopes. ???

Makelele is entirely overrated. He looks good this year because of the defensive focus Mourinho has installed. But last year under Ranieri, he was all over the shop.

If Gerrard goes, we need a midfielder that can score goals, not one that refuses to cross the half way line. Ballack and Baraja fit this mould and are half the price we'd get for Stevie. Leaving us another 15m for a central defender and a wide player that can switch from right to left, like Pires and C Ronaldo do.

Ah, but the Beni-man could convince Bayern to take kewell as a make weight!(Should be quite heavy with all those bandages!!!!) Baraja is getting on now, and if Nando was £6.3m, Baraja should come for less. Remains to be seen, tho.:p

are you serious? chelsea's last prem game against bham on saturday showed just how much they miss him,

bham are the most boring team in the prem yet were causing chelsea no end of problems, constantly pressing, to say makelele is entirely overrated just cos of chelseas defence is absurd, say he gets a lil too much credit but entirely overrated your having a laff,

its like the Cech argument, hes only good cos of chelseas defence, yes that true but having said that he has great reflexes also opposing teams need to get past chelsea's defence in order to hassle Cech in the same way opposing teams need to get past makelele to touch chelsea's defence, he is very much living up to his hype

He's still a knob, though. Carling Cup final was the 1st time I've seen Stevie G used as a ladder!

You're either missing the point entirely, or you dont understand enough about football.

I didnt say he is overrated because Chelsea has a good defence. I said the contribution he makes is overrated because Chelsea are a much more defensive team under Mourinho.

This means when they dont have he ball, everyone defends more aggressively dufus. Do you not recall what Mourinho slagged off Joe Cole about after they beat us at the Bridge despite scoring?

Good chance to get Baraja and Aimar if Baros go the other direction. Plus Igor (as a back up) and Hamann (on his last leg), the centre midfield looks OK. IF Gerrard leave now (and we will know it is only for £££ since this team in on the way up fast), we can use the £40M to add depth to our squad. The problem this season (up to now at least) is that week after week, we are struggling to field a strong first XI with our wafer thin squad compared to all the big guns.

Intelligent post. Try telling Real and the current Chelsea team that Markelele is over-rated...

Try telling the French national team he is overrated as well. Since he's come into the national team, they've gone from winning World Cups and Euro to losing every game.

I wish when I played football I had the luxury of running 50% less than the rest of the midfield players, sitting on the half way line when we have the ball, and never passing the ball more than 5 metres.

At least Viera and Keane get forward and help when their sides are attacking.

Makele is no where in the league of these kind of midfielders.
