well tonight is a momentous occasion and it would be fitting for us to win. I think if we can come out firing on all cylinders and with Anfield cheering the lads on we can expect a victory, perhaps by a couple of goals.

Phoney friends set for the real thing Apr 5 2005

THE familiar voice at the end of Vladimir Smicer's telephone has provided a fair indication of Liverpool's improving form and fortunes in recent weeks.

As soon as the draw for the European Cup quarter-finals was made 18 days ago the Anfield midfielder received a call from Turin, home of friend, former European Footballer of the Year and formidable Juventus leader Pavel Nedved.

The Czech Republic captain has fond memories of Anfield having scored in a 2-1 win over Italy as his nation became the surprise package of Euro 96.

Initially he had good reason to savour his return in tonight's poignant Champions League fixture too.

Liverpool were paired with the Italian giants two days after a depressing goalless draw against Blackburn Rovers and Nedved, hardly surprisingly, was left inspired by the struggles of Rafael Benitez's side.

Then came Everton, and a performance and result that may have shaped the course of Liverpool's season for the better. The Juventus playmaker was not impressed.

"Pavel called me when the draw was made," said Smicer,, now back in Benitez's thoughts after months recovering from a serious knee injury. "He said he was really looking forward to playing at Anfield, but after the Everton game he called again and said: 'Oh my God, I hope you won't be playing like that against us'."

He adds: "I am friends with him. I have played with him for a long time in the international team. We are around the same ages - he is one year older than me - and we keep in touch on the phone. There have been a lot of calls already about this game.

"I am looking forward to seeing him at Anfield. He likes the stadium because he scored here at Euro 96 against Italy. I told him the atmosphere will be great and that we will kick him a lot!"

Nedved's other Czech teammate at Anfield, Milan Baros, admits Liverpool must recreate the tempo and commitment that steam-rollered their Merseyside rivals if they are to undermine Juventus confidence tonight.

But that is easier said than done with his national captain on a personal mission in the Champions League.

Nedved is desperate to make amends for 2003 when a semi-final booking cost him a place in the Old Trafford final against AC Milan.

Nedved announced that he'll retire from professional football if he keeps beeing injured during games...
After the kick he received in Portugal, and the headbutt this ****** Raul Bravo viciouly game him against Madrid, he says that his health is more valuable than the game...
