Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

i saw the inter and ac match last night, both teams looked good but nothing totally out of the ordinary. Juventus are good as always, barcelona look pretty unstoppable lately and real madrid cant be discounted. Also the french teams arent performing that badly but they get along rest in between champions league matches with the french league being not dissimilar to the scottish premier

Michael Owen 3 goals in 3 matches! Can he yet make the breakthrough and prove a success at Real. He used to do this for a while at Liverpool, score a hatful, and then suffer an injury and loss of form on his return. You have to admire him.

Shut up, Mike!

Michael Owen did little to ease the fears of Liverpool fans yesterday when he admitted that his former team-mate Steven Gerrard had shown great interest in Real Madrid amid reports that the Spanish club are interested in making him their latest galàctico .
Speculation in the Spanish media has suggested that Madrid, who have been in desperate need of a defensive midfielder since the departure of Claude Makélélé, are keeping tabs on Gerrard with an eye to a move next summer.

Owen claimed that he had "not seen" the reports and insisted: "I wouldn't want to say anything that would annoy the Liverpool fans." He did, though, admit: "It would be very nice for him to be linked with such a big club."

While he would not be drawn on the speculation, Owen did reveal that his former team-mate has maintained a keen interest since his own £8m move in the summer. "When I scored the first goal I picked up the phone and there were about 20 messages - and Steven was one of them," he added. "That was nice of him and shows that he is interested."

Anfieldadorer,
If there ever comes a time and day that a player like Gerrard wants to leave, let him go as long as we get a huge bundle of cash for him! If a player who is so coveted in the club and city he plays in wants to leave, then it must be for one or two overwhelming reasons which contributes to the "push factor" inspite of all of the "pull factors" he is already familliar with at Liverpool. Gerrard, above all else, should realise what's he has now at Liverpool. You could never imagine Raul leaving Ral Madrid or Totti leaving Roma.

Take Owen's case - we don't really know why he was so eager to leave as it was never really spoken in public. We can only guess and speculate. I suppose it was because he does not feel that he will be an automatic first choice with Benithez and does not relish the prospect of being rotated as Liverpool has him, Baros, Cisse and Pongolle.

Real Madrid may be a "vogue" place to be but that is because they have Zidane and Figo, two of the best offensive midfielders in the game. However, they are on the wrong side of 30 and will soon either leave or retire as they surely can't go on much longer at that high a level. After this, Madrid looks like declining in the wake of other teams who are on the rise and playing such attractive football - notably Barca who has a young core of attacking players.

Also, Real Madrid fans are so fickle - they are giving a lot of stick Ronaldo a lot of stick because he has not been scoring regularly enough. They adore you but in an instant they can really turn nasty and boo you every time.

The choice is his, Owen's influence or no, but for us, we should ensure we get a bundle if he does go there.

agreed azri
it depends on what's inside of gerrard himself, if his mind tell himself to leave, i see no point in keeping him "physically". The positive side are probably there'd be plenty of cash available for the project rafalution; and we'd be still having alonso with us.

My gut feeling is we will bring in Morientes in January with the captain going the other way in the summer. The thought of this absolutely devastated me back in the summer but i've got so much confidence in Rafa that i believe we are going in the right direction with or without Stevie Gerrard.

IF Owen does not have a successful career at Madrid I can see him playing with ex-Reds at Man. City. But so far he has scored a goal in every game he's had a full start for Real.

I for one am glad Owen is doing well. Although he left, I can't forget what he did for the club. I watched a DVD of the 2001 FA Cup final yesterday, and when Owen scores that 2nd goal it still sends shivers down my spine.

im pleased owens doing well for himself over there, but im not too suprised at this run of form, it's the sort of thing he does all the time scores a few in a row then go's on a barren spell for about 5 or 6 games, this is probably the same thing

Agree.

The barren spell is normally precipitated by injury. He usually still ends up with a reasonable goal tally at the end of the season though.
