PEPE REINA - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I think Rodgers was right to give Jones his place in goal for Everton. To me it was a case of him having done well between the sticks prior to the game and keeping his place on merit. Many managers would have thrown Pepe back in as by all accounts he was back in training. I think that's a good message Rodgers has sent out to the rest of the squad. Unfortunately for Jones though his punch was fecking school boy stuff, coupled with this his tendency to hoof it (he doesn't look comfortable with the ball at his feet), this leaves the door open again for Reina to be reinstalled - even though his form has been poor and has had more blunders than Jones in games. Hopefully, Reina now sees this as competition and rises to it.

It's just ashame that Rodgers doesn't do the same thing with Gerrard when not performing well isn't it?

Have to admit, i wouldn't be surprised if Pepe moves to Barca next year. He is the ideal replacement for Valdes.

Hopefully, BR has someone lined up for us for the long-term.

I think he will be off aswell.
He has been my favourite keeper for some 20 years in an LFC shirt....but i think he will be missed in the dressing room, more so than on the pitch.
His performances have dropped.  If we can get close to 20m for him, there are plenty of top quality keepers around at a fraction of that, which would prove an adequate replacement.
Vorm, Mignolet, Begovic, Krul....not sure we could get Akinfeev but worth a try.
Vorm would be the obvious target though.  BR has already sung his praises since he left Swansea, and he loves to surround himself with players he has groomed :)

Not saying i want him to go....far from it.  Just think it's on the cards

Pepe Reina’s representatives are set to sit down with Liverpool in the next few days to discuss the goalkeeper’s future at the club.

The Spaniard’s father recently expressed his desire to see his son replace Victor Valdes at Barcelona, and Reina’s agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon, will now hold talks with the Reds in order to establish where the 30-year-old figures in Brendan Rodgers’ plans.

Reina has three years remaining on his current deal at Anfield, but his father, Miguel Reina, said: ‘I am absolutely convinced Pepe would be more than delighted to return to his Barcelona, where they made him into an upstanding man from the time he arrived at the age of 12 until he left.

‘I say it publicly: I would be delighted to see Pepe back at Barca, of course I would. What father would not like to see his son at Barca? He has already been there but to return would be extraordinary.

‘Pepe has shown sufficient proof of the calibre of goalkeeper he is and right now – and sorry for the lack of modesty – he would be up to the task and the ideal keeper for FC Barcelona.’

I know some of us have had our gripes about Pepe's performance in recent times but personally I'd be sad to see him go , especially when we have no one remotely near his quality as a ready made replacement.

He's not irreplaceable. I'd hate to see him go, but if he wants to go and the price for him is good, then he can go where ever he wants.
This is for the summer transfer window though, right?

he owes the club nothing and i'd wish him all the best if he decided to move on. a lot of less loyal players would have left years ago, especially without champions league football.

personally i'd go for begovic of stoke who i think is top class. arguably been the best keeper in the league this year. don't be surprised if rodgers goes for vorm though.

id hate to see pepe leave but if barca come calling then we wont stand a chance of holding on to him :( .
vorn or begovic would be a decent replacement for him but vorn would be more comfortable with our style so id like to see us land him.
if we somehow manage though to get top 4 then maybe pepe will stay.

Vorm is a good call, however Jack Butland @ Birmingham may be worth a punt. He looks good, very similar to Joe Hart prior to his rise to fame.

tbh with the greatest amount of respect i wouldnt be bothered if Pepe went, he has been a top keeper for us and a top ambassador for our club, but Barca is his other home where he started

if we could get a nice large fee plus perhaps a youngster chucked in then why not

his form has been up and down the past year also

his form has been "up and down" the past 2 years....still a great keeper, but wouldnt grudge him wanting to go to Barca.

I'd expect Butland as it seems we have been legitimately interested in him.  Wouldn't be surprised if we went for Vorm because of Rodgers, and I'd love to see Begovic linked as well.

I must say I do think Pepe will be leaving us, possibly not this month but in the Summer, and I'm ok with that as long as he leaves in good terms. (Doesn't go to united, say anything bad about the club, or wait until the transfer window's closing)

Butland is 19 and hasn't even completed a full season in the Championship. Too risky to make him our no.1 keeper. Would be a great signing for the future though.
As for a replacement for Pepe, I've always been a fan of German goalies but I doubt we have a chance of signing any of my favorites so I won't bother mentioning any of them. If we're going for a keeper from the EPL, I wouldn't mind any of the two Dutch keepers (Swansea's Vorm or Newcastle's Krul) and Begovic is a good shout as well. My favorite of the three would be Vorm.

Pepe will be gone in the summer and i think the time is right.

I think we should move heaven and earth to get Begovic of Stoke here. They have a tremendous record for not conceding goals and its mainly down to him. City are interested so if we fail to land him. Cesar will not be wanting to play in the championship next year so if QPR go down we should target him as a second choice. Martin Steklenburg of Roma is also a good shout
