Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Raoul » Sat Mar 17, 2012 6:49 pm

We clearly have some players underperforming (or unable to perform at the level we'd like) and sometimes it looks like Kenny's starting XIs, tactics or substitutions don't make sense, and we have an issue right now with our finishing. But there have been too many times since the King returned where we have played fantastically, with real energy and verve, to say that he is getting it wrong. What I find most frustrating is the inconsistency - the Liverpool that plays Everton or (another?  :eyebrow  ) big team is completely different to the Liverpool that plays the rest of the teams in the league. This has been a problem for Kenny, for Roy, for Rafa...

This, it seems to me, is the biggest problem we need to solve - and I don't think it is selections or transfers or tactics or substitutions - it is a cultural problem. Somehow turning up for the big games and cruising through the rest of the games has become part of the club's culture. Culture change is bloody hard, but the pay off will be significant. This is what I'm looking for Kenny to change; to get a hunger in the players each and every Saturday.

Kenny should raid the Athletic Bilbao squad for new signings this summer before Barca and the big boys do. Some amazing young talent there.

The way they stuffed the mancs over 2 legs was Barca esq.

You can guaruntee their young starlets won't still be there next season if they triumph in the europa, and I bet whiskey nose has sent his scouting troops over there to spy after that display.

Very impressive.

I personally feel we only need 3 big signings. A fowler type striker, a playmaker and a decent winger who can score.
But TOP DRAWER ones.

I reckon that if we converted a majority of our chances this season and closed out matches we'd be in the top four, there's no question about it. We lack a finisher, someone who can put the ball in back of the net on a consistent basis. Suarez is a talented footballer which is why we was brought in, but to me he's a second striker, someone that plays just behind your main striker, probably why the plan was to play Suarez behind Torres, but then Torres left.

Kenny needs to bring in a creative CM and he needs to bring in a natural goalscorer like an Owen or a Torres. Defensively we're sound and are a solid side, but offensively we're dreadful.

as disappointing as our league form has been we have done really well in the cups, we have won one, beating the likes of stoke, chelsea and city along the way and we are in the semi final of another after beating stoke and putting manchester united out in an earlier round.
sometimes teams do well in cup competitions because they`ve had an easy draw, that didnt happen for us, we`ve done it the hard way.

probably be a liverpool Chelsea final.

thought we did well in parts today, although it wasn't pretty, but a result none the less

I'm not fussed if our performances are pretty or not, all I care about is winning matches.

Hopefully we can add an FA Cup to our trophy cabinet.

we`ve got a tough game against everton or sunderland to negotiate first, our form has been that erratic this season you just dont know what liverpool is going to turn up. if we put in one of those flat, lethargic performances like the one against sunderland recently or like the one at old trafford in the league we wont be returning to wembley to play in the final.
i`m glad we avoided spurs in the semi`s though, they are not playing well but they have one or two really quick players like bale, lennon and walker who would be a real handful on a big pitch like wembley.

not many sides look good against stoke anyway, even teams with a good record against them like united tend to just get the job done, stoke manage to turn the game into an arm wrestle whoever they are playing.

Stoke seem to roll over against Manchester United, the same way most teams in the League do.

yeah but they still tend to be scrappy wins, similar to our one today.
the point i was making is that not many teams play exhibition footy against stoke, you do well just to beat them.

Very true, they're an effective side, but I hope they are amongst the relegation candidates next season.

I can tolerate their style of football, because football is a results based business and you have to do whatever you can to win matches, Stoke do this well, but I hate Tony Pulis with a passion.

Absolutely nothing but derision for the football Pulis and his team play ,and their fans are equally as loathsome .

Good performance all round especially the way we defended and saw out the ninety minutes. Carroll did well I thought he played his part.

Overall Suarez and Downing were the key men today and not just because they scored. Skrtel was also magnificent today and Kelly was excellent.

A good win and let's hope we can keep going at QPR in midweek.

For me the big picture is looking at the league table & seeing that we are being chased by Swansea. That in itself tells you how consistent we are. But we beat all the big teams in the cups? Not trying to spoil anyone's party here just don't agree with ignoring our league position.  How many of you would trade our cup success so far this season for a fourth spot finish? I know I would. Think we would all feel better about our questionable signings then.
