He has improved under Kenny – but so has each and every player. When times are good, everyone has stepped up to the mark, kuyt, maxi, even the young defenders. The time will come though when the going gets tough, can he still perform like this, or will he revert to his old self?
We have Carra, Agger, Skrtel, Soto and Kelly as our centre backs and I think we are crying out for a mainstay big, strong, good in the air, ball-playing centre back (I don’t ask for much!!). I think he still makes a few too many errors to be our first choice CB. I think we’re all agreed that Agger would be infront of Skrtel if he could stay fit, so the only reason Skrtel’s got as many minutes as he has is that Agger and Carra have both been out so much. He has improved but is not enough to be replied upon for a top 4 challenge in my view.
We conceded 5 goals in our last 3 games, and add to that 3 against West Ham under Kenny, so despite improvements in players, we still need to tighten up at the back. Yes we’ve had injuries, but we’re always going to have injuries, especially with Agger in squad.
I would prefer Phil Jones or Gary Cahill to Skrtel. Depending on how Kelly will be used could depend on who we bring in. Ie if Kelly was to stay wide, then I’d advocate bringing Jones in as young English CB, but if Kelly really wants to play more central and the boos agrees, then with an injury prone agger and an aging carra, I’d opt for Cahill with the view to having him and carra/agger this/next season and Cahell/Kelly for 2/3 years time.
