Aren't we lucky though that we have a LMA winner 35 year top class experienced manager to point it out to the world.

Nice to see things being kept in house as well.

how do i research what Roy said privately to the team before a game ?

There's no question that our 18 million quid right back has been bitterly disappointing for 18 months or so now. It's even at the stage where we have a young kid coming through who is actually a centre half who looks to all intents and purposes like a better bet.

It's the managers job to get Johnson to play better. Obviously Roy didn't sign him in the first place, but equally obviously he has to try and maximise the assets at his disposal, such as they are. At his best, Johnson is definately one of our better players so i don't blame Roy for trying to gee him up a bit. Some players respond to the arm around the shoulder, some people respond to the kick up the jacksy, some prefer it behind closed doors and some respond better to it being out in the open. Whatever has been tried before with Johnson clearly hasn't worked, so it'll be interesting to see if this latest attempt gets us anywhere.

Naturally the crew are laying into Roy because he went public in criticising Johnson (bizarrely the same crew who laid into him for backing Poulsen and not joining in with the booing), but I for one think this new approach is worth a shot. Sooner or later we are either going to have to get some of these "assets" producing, or we are going to be staring down the gunbarrell at some some serious losses. Already we've got a 20 million pound midfielder on loan in Italy, an 11 million pound striker who can't even get on the bench, as well as a bloke who we've only just taken delivery of who's on 80K a week and is palpably not good enough. The last thing we need is Johnson adding to our extremely expensive pile of deadwood.

I hope Roys tactics work on him, if they do those who have predictably stuck the boot in will have a chance to say they called it wrong and well done to the manager.

that fat scouser usually has his head screwed on and writes good posts, but i can see he's now getting carried away as well. where do ideas like alienation and castigation come from? hodsgon has said that johnson certainly hasn't been playing as if he was england's right back, that he can play much better and that he needs to pull his socks up. wherever it gets said i'm sure johnson would agree with it.

OR. GJ could just sulk about it....from his disposition, I reckon he'll sulk instead...

That's all very well bigmick , but to do it when he's been out injured for a number of weeks and is still not fit , isn't , to my mind right. At this moment Glen Johnson can do nothing to prove Roy wrong . That cannot be right !

Johnson on his day is a fantastic player. If we had a more solid defence and midfield it wouldn't be such a problem. Johnson is a confidence player so I don't think style of man management is going to have the desired effect. If anything he has just put him in the shop window.

Id likean answer to this .why is it ok for some of you for Roy to come out on Wednesday and defend Poulsons performances this season , and yet a couple of days later he comes out and slates Johnson. why

the way i see it, the manager is merely implying that Johnson has got more to offer and is not maximizing his potential.
Johnson can either wallow in self pity, or he can choose to be a pro and take it as constructive criticism.
in short, Roy is challenging Johnson to improve. whats the big deal?

its easy if you remain objective and don't get caught up in all the hyperbole. he didn't exactly praise poulsen to the skys and he hasn't exactly slated johnson either. i remember i while back he mentioned he was disappointed with poulsen's initial form as well (don't ask me to go looking for quotes though...) - which is pretty much what he's done with johnson.

as usual the way he goes about his business isn't reason to give him unreasonable plaudits but its not cause to crucify him either.

by having a more solid defense and midfield, it would not be a problem because Glen's limitations are not exposed. last season we had Mash and Kuyt covering alot of ground for him which allowed him to do what he does best - attack. hopefully sometime in the future, he gets the chance on the wing.

Another point to add, Poulsen is new to this league and the team, he is giving him a sort of motivation to do better, hopefully it works. As for Johnson, he is experienced in the premier league, its his second season with Liverpool, so you expect more of him. Roy didn't go on and slate Johnson, he didn't say ''Johnson your :censored:

, disgrace'', he merely pointed that he isn't living up to standards like he has done before with Portsmouth, or the first half of last season and he wants to him to get his form back. Whether his kick up the @rse technique works or not, time will tell.

Johnson is the much better player of the two...
Hes a regular starter, has plenty of league experience and has been at the club for over a year now... You'd expect more from him than he's shown so far...

Poulsen on the other hand is new to the club and new to the country.. Needs time to adjust and settle at the club... I dont think hes more than a squad player for us and the less pressure hes under during this period the better imo...

Having said that, i still dont particularly agree with Roy's approach here... I think giving Johnson a few weeks after returning from injury to see if he improves or not would have been better... He pretty much challenged the player to prove his worth and depending on the player's personality it either works or it doesnt.. Obviously Roy knows Johnson and Poulsen much better than you and I do, so for now i guess all we can do is wait and see how all this turns out...

He didn't defend Poulsen though he said that Poulsen hasn't been playing well, hence the probable reason why Roy has dropped him in the last few games.

Mind you, in saying that Poulsen was a poor signing considering the money we paid and transfers we lost. His best game for us this season was against Chelsea.

If you cut through the hyperbole and get to the quotes, Roy is simply saying "pull your socks up, Glen". Why do people have to get all neurotic over something so mild? It isn't necessarily the best approach to have taken, nor obviously the worst - that's a matter of judgment only an insider could properly gauge. Indeed, the player might not even have read the comments, but going by some of the responses you might be forgiven for thinking that Roy had actually come out and said, "Glen you fukkin muppet. England's best right back? My a'rse". That would definitely be very poor man-management.
