Premier league 25 man squads - To be declared today

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Igor Zidane » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:39 pm

Liverpool Football Club has submitted its 21-man squad to the Premier League, in accordance with new rules which have come into force today.

For the 2010-11 season, top-flight clubs must register a squad of up to 25 players for league games, which must include at least eight 'home grown' players and no more than 17 'non home grown' players.

Home grown players are defined as those who irrespective of nationality or age, have been affiliated to the FA or Welsh FA for a period of three seasons or 36 months prior to their 21st birthday.

This is the squad Liverpool have submitted today:

Home grown players
Jamie Carragher
Joe Cole
Stephen Darby
Steven Gerrard
Glen Johnson
Brad Jones
Paul Konchesky
Jay Spearing

Non home grown players:
Daniel Agger
Fabio Aurelio
Ryan Babel
Milan Jovanovic
Dirk Kuyt
Sotirios Kyrgiakos
Lucas Leiva
Raul Meireles
Christian Poulsen
Pepe Reina
Maxi Rodriguez
Martin Skrtel
Fernando Torres

Clubs can supplement their squads with an unlimited amount of players under the age of 21, meaning Roy Hodgson will also be able to call on the services of Peter Gulacsi, Martin Kelly, Daniel Wilson, Jonjo Shelvey, Daniel Pacheco, Nathan Eccleston and David Ngog for Barclays Premier League games this season.

This squad list applies to Barclays Premier League games only.

I guess we can't really be surprised who was going to make the squad.  It was somewhat obvious for 22 or so of them.  The last 3 probably won't even play.

haha.

I was expecting a few higher profile players to end up being left out of the man city squad and loaned out to other leagues, but surprisingly there's really not.

Balotelli will have to be in the list next season.

You can see how the rule has influenced our transfer activity.

Now, there's less incentive to stockpile deadwood - the Voronins, Degens, Cavlieris of this world, and more incentive to sign homegrown players e.g. Jones, Cole, Konchesky, and more to the point: increased incentive to develop or sign homegrown players to replenish that quota on an ongoing basis. Translated, it means we've more incentive to keep and nurture a player like Martin Kelly (instead of say signing a cheap "ready" foreign import) so's when Carra retires he takes his place on the list.

You might say that at the moment there is still too much scope to stockpile cheaper "foreign" imports, and here you could cite Maxi, Babel, and Kyrgiakos, all who serve as backup to the first team. Give it a few years though for teams to adjust and if the time's right the PL can always increase the quota to 10 or 12. You wouldn't to raise it too high too quickly or else you risk damaging the competitiveness of the league.

How was DC deadwood?

Pepe is the solid no 1 so no second string goalie is going to get a chance but that doesnt mean they are 'deadwood'.

I dont understand the negative comments against DC.

Forgive me. He wasn't strictly speaking "deadwood". The other two were but like them he falls into the category of foreign players who played minimal first team football and is therefore a prime candidate to ship out in place of a homegrown alternative.

I'd put Pacheco somewhere up front as well CAM, F.  I think he's going to have a very good season.
