Well I believe we will be battling it out with Spurs , Everton and maybe Villa for places 5th to 8th looking at current squads . I believe our chances of surpassing that will involve us having Torres , gerrard and cole fit all season and that something I don't see happening wih the past injury problems they all have had . We currently don't have the depth of squad to deal with those injuries where as I think the top 4 clubs do and to some extent spurs as well .

If we do get back up Torres and keep them fit all season then we may squeeze into CL but I can't see it at the moment

Joe Cole is better than Lionel Messi, claims Liverpool's Steven Gerrard

• Captain excited about new era after 'horror' of last season
• 'Anything Messi can do, Joe can do as well, if not better'

"Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool are set for a bright new era under Roy Hodgson after the "horror" of last season – and claims that the new signing Joe Cole is better than Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

Gerrard, in an interview with Match of the Day magazine, said the new manager has already given Liverpool a lift after a disappointing seventh-place finish last season.

"It's a great club and after speaking with Roy Hodgson I'm really pleased to see his plans for the club. It's a new era now – we must forget about the horror of what happened last season and get this club back to where it belongs, which is the Champions League at the very least."

Gerrard said Cole, signed in July on a Bosman from Chelsea, has the ability to drive the team forward.

"[Lionel] Messi can do some amazing things, but anything he can do Joe can do as well, if not better. He used to shock us in training by doing footy tricks with a golf ball that most players can't even do with a football. I really fancy Joe for the [player of the year] award this season.""

Jesus, SG must be on drugs- that can't be good for us

Joe Cole is not better than Messi but he is a damn good player with amazing creative ability. For a free transfer he is the next best thing for Liverpool.

That reminds of Jason Cundy after Barcelona gave Man Utd a lesson in the CL final.  Cundy tried to say Barcelona would struggle in the Premiership.  Laughable stuff.  They would rip the likes of stoke and others to bits.  Messi could play anywhere.  The idea he couldn’t play in the premiership makes no sense at all.  Messi doesn’t have it easy in Spain and gets kicked plenty.  What sets him apart is he gets up from the kicks and still rips sides to shreds.  Joe Cole is nowhere near that level but that’s nothing to be ashamed of as hardly anyone else is either.

If Ronaldo never played for Man Utd people would be saying he wouldn’t hack it in England either.  I don’t understand where this mentality comes from.

Sure he was.  40 goals in a season and nearly a goal a game at Real Madrid suggest otherwise.

If Torres took pens he would of scored more than 40 that particular year  :)

Correctamundo!
I never said he wasnt a good player.
But his posing, preening, diving and cheating was not for me. Wouldnt have touched him with a barge pole. By the way how many goals did he score against us for the skanks?
I think you'll find its not many...

And most again would of been from the spot.
Id say he only scored one maybe two against us from open play.

Could be horribly wrong though.  :D

i think it originates from the number of 'world class' foreign players who've come to the Premier league and then failed because they were unable to adapt to the lack of time on the ball and toughness of tackles. For every Ronaldo and Torres, there's been 50 other big money buys who've failed simply because they didn't have the balls to toughen up.
