It's all about potential at a young age, Shelvy from what I have seen, both in the clip above and clips from Charlton, has great potential. Hopefully we can nurture it.

Ashley Young - Watford to Villa
Gareth Bale - Southampton to Tottenham
Scott Parker - Charlton to Chelsea

to name a few more  :;):

Moyes consistently brings in players from the leagues and they have mostly been successes.
Cahill
Jagielka
Lescott

As a person who knows Sheffield United fairly well, jagielka should of gone two seasons before but he committed and gave us hope he would stay when were in the PL. Thanks for freaking West Ham we went down and lost him although he deserved to be at a better club as hewas quality all over the pitch including in net!

shelvey looks calm on the ball, strong, good passer and reader of the game, he's still only 18 and i think he'l go onto play for england. be interesting to see what he offers this season though, could be one to watch if given the chance

The thing is they had to make Mike Myers look even uglier than he is with make-up, Mr Jonjo doesn't need it!  :wwww

I just hope he doesn't turn into a Darren Huckerby - really good in the lower leagues, can't cope in the Prem...

Russian Doll! Russian Doll! Cue a mod to rebump the thread on it

Were all of those LEAGUE ONE players though?!?!? I'm not suggesting Championship is ok, League one is cr ap, but there is a WHOLE DIVISION between the two leagues.

Oh and Crouch was bought from Southampton when they'd just been relegated, it's always wiser to check facts before putting them forward as such. Of course he started out at Tottenham so even if you count where he started it is top flight, although he did play for QPR

So of those names cited in a couple of posts, here's where the teams were the season during or just after which the transfer happened :

TOP TIER

30/01/04 Parker to Chelsea from Charlton (7th in Premiership 03/04)
20/07/05 Crouch to Liverpool from Southampton (20th in Premiership 04/05 = relegated)
18/01/07 Young to A Villa from Watford (20th in Premiership 06/07 = relegated)
04/07/07 Jagielka to Everton from Sheff Utd (18th in Premiership 06/07 = relegated)

SECOND TIER

23/07/04 Cahill to Everton from Millwall (10th in Championship 03/04)
16/06/06 Lescott to Everton from Wolves (7th in Championship 05/06)
25/05/07 Bale to Spurs from Southampton (5th in Championship 06/07)

THIRD TIER

15/01/91 Redknapp to Liverpool from Bournemouth (9th in old Division Three)
15/07/97 Murphy to Liverpool from Crewe (6th in League one 96/97)
31/05/10 Shelvey to Liverpool from Charlton (4th in League One 09/10)

As for Barry, it's debatable whether his youth career at Brighton counts as he was only 16 at the time AND I don't believe he made any appearances for Brighton whereas I'm confident the rest did for their respective selling sides. Brighton were 2nd bottom in League Two in 96/97

And if you think I'm being picky because such and such a team was relegated preceding the transfer, the MASSIVE point is those players would have played in the Premiership which Shelvey clearly hasn't.................. So they had already proven their top flight credentials, can rule a few out already, and Championship experience > League One experience ergo less of a gamble

Oh and Redknapp played for Bournemouth when his dad was manager there, his youth career was at Tottenham although why I've excluded Barry is a reason to exclude his youth career. Crewe have a history of producing talent so they are an exception

I think what this 'little' exercise proves is people spout things as fact based on vague recollection and not accounting for the fact that some sides weren't necessarily in the league they are now when cited transfers were made :no

And for every example there is more often than not a counter example. I'll give you one name that doesn't relate to moves to the Premiership but I'm sure you can see the reason I've quoted it

FREDDY ADU

And for those wanting a transfer/loan history on Adu, the yank wonderkid who has left everyone wondering what happened to him

03/04/2004 debut for DC United
11/12/2006 'traded' to Real Salt Lake
31/07/2007 signed for Benfica
??/07/2008 loaned to Monaco
31/08/2009 loaned to Belenenses
06/01/2010 loaned to Aris Thessaloniki

More moves than the karate kid, played for six different clubs in seven years must be a record surely?!? He was not even called up for the US World Cup squad of 30, has made just 15 senior appearances when once he was one of the most talked about young talents ever.

Much Adu about nothing
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer
