I was happy he came (but TBF and being totally honest, I fairly obviously I was going to be pretty happy with a new manager pretty much whoever it was) but I must admit Roy's surprised me a bit. I did a bit of reading up on him just before he joined and yes his record is pretty impressive, yes he's got plenty of experience, yes he's a safe pair of hands and yes he's got an excellent reputation etc etc. The way he's surprised me though is in the way he's taken everything in his stride, the way he's conducted himself, the way he's handled things.
Many fans expressed grave doubts over whether he could make the quantum leap (and it is a quantum leap lets be fair) from Fulham to Liverpool, but he seems to me anyway to be taking it cooly in his stride. There's no wonder the big players are staying, because he is an extremely impressive character. I don't to be totally honest remember ever looking at him while he was at Fulham and being overtly impressed with the way he conducted himself, he just seemed like another manager to me. Since he's come though, it's almost like he was born to do the job the way he goes about things. If you didn't know, you'd think he had come from a really big club abroad rather than Fulham. They call it charisma, presence, carry and all that stuff. Roy has it, feck knows how but he does. He's one of those people who when he speaks you want to listen because he talks a bundle of sense. He was my second choice once Mourinho had gone behind Martin O Neill, but I wouldn't swap him now. Anybody who isn't pleasantly surprised by how he's getting on, and dare I say it at least a little bit impressed, is a hard man or woman to please. You can easily see why having interviewed a few people they gave Roy the job.
I got the impression that when we employed him some of our rival fans were laughing at us, they thought it was funny that we could get ONLY Roy Hodgson, they thought it was a sign of how far we've fallen. I've a strong feeling that they won't be laughing anymore, and not for a while to come either.
