I guess it all depends on Hodgson's assessment of the squad dude. If he's not happy with certain areas of the squad he's gonna have to sell to buy i'd guess. Cole's arrival is a threat to Aquilani's position because he can play through the middle, he can play off the striker, he likes to play between the lines. It depends on how the manager is planning to utilise Cole but if it's through the middle (and Cole indicated that was where he wanted to play + perhaps that had a bearing on him joining LFC, could be Benny?) then Alberto may find himself expendable. Cole also has the advantage of having proved himself in the Premier League + he is capable of playing on either flank. Also, if we're planning a lot 4-4-2 this season I just can't see Aquilani getting the nod as one of a midfield two.

having both aquilani and cole in the squad gives us a lot of strength, creativity and options in the advanced midfield department. i like it.

People said Purslow sold Benayoun and Roy had nothing to do with it, they said Purslow was doing the signing and the selling. I don't believe that to be true, I think it's Roy. Whoever it is though, 6 mill for Benayoun then Cole on a free is absolutely fantastic business by any standards.
Top man Roy Hodgson
Didn't you say just recently that the tracking of Joe cole was probably initiated by the PREVIOUS manager or something along that line? And that the PREVIOUS manager must have been heavily involved in the Benayoun deal as well?
Then surely credit must also go to the PREVIOUS manager and why change your tune now?
I'm not changing my tune at Magus, what a strange commentUnlike some on here, I'm more than prepared to pay credit where it is due. Now undoubtedly the previous manager will have been interested in Cole, four of the other five teams in the top seven (except of course Cheslea as they were selling him) were interested in Joe Cole and tried to get him. He's obviously a good player, an England international on a free, and I've no doubt our previous manager was well aware of the fact, fair play to him. Being interested in him and signing him however are different things, ask Harry Redknapp and Arsene Wenger if you don't believe me.
Now as I said in my post which you refer to, Cole has been widely quoted as saying he wanted a manager who "loved him", who would "talk to him', would "trust him" and "believe in him". None of us know of course if the previous manager would have been able to entice Cole to turn down the two London clubs, but Roy did and for that he deserves credit.
I'm more than happy though to give credit to whoever deserves it.

That has to be the main worry for us going in to the new season unless he's thinking of playing agger there!
Not sure who we could bring in to fill that gap - not really got a player that jumps to my mind that we could afford

Figeroa seems the most likely given the press rumours I'd guess. Wayne Bridge could be another possibility given that City are in the process of splashing £17 million on another left back.
I actually think the kid is better than most on here give him credit for, but 5 mill is in my opinion good money for him. As for who sanctioned it, well almost certainly the previous manager will have been heavily involved in the early stages of the negotiations before he left. I've no doubt that if the offer had been made to buy Insua for 5 million quid while he was still at the club, he'd have taken it in a heartbeat. Much the same as he was involved in the Benayoun sale, and fair play to him that was a good deal too.

really hope its figeroa out of those two. in my opinion wayne bridge was the only left back weaker than insua out of the top seven teams last season.
btw, scott - i'm not stalking you, mate, even though it might look like it
