The imminent squad reshuffle... - ...thoughts?

Speaking of left backs...

Liverpool are believed to be preparing to lock horns with Sunderland in a battle to secure the services of Wigan Athletic defender Maynor Figueroa.

The Black Cats have been linked with the Honduras international, who was signed by manager Steve Bruce during his time at the DW Stadium.

However, The Daily Mail reports Reds boss Roy Hodgson has earmarked the 27-year-old as a target to bolster his defence, as young full-back Emiliano Insua is thought to be a transfer target for Serie A club Fiorentina.

Liverpool are also said to be watching Cardiff City star Joe Ledley, who has in the past been linked with moves to Stoke City, Celtic and West Bromwich Albion.

would like figueroa but not at the expense of insua. going into the season with only one recognised left back would be incredibly short sighted.

i'd also take ledley on a free although i see him as being a squad player at best. at least he'd be another home grown player.

The Wigan bloke Fingerola or whatever he's called is an excellent player. Funnily enough I shouted him last season so me and Roy are obviously on the same wavelength. I also agree with whoever it was that mentioned Tompkins at West Ham. He'll make a good centre half I think, although he has got some learning to do. The Benfica bloke though (Luiz apparently) was just about as impressive a defender as I saw all season. That said he'd probably cost a bomb.

The way City are going there will be several decent players looking to move on....

Richards

Ireland

Barry (less likely)

Onuha (sp??)

So whilst they play with their monopoly money we could snap up Ireland and Richards for about £10-12m for both.

Richards can play RB and CB, and Ireland is a decent CM with lots of EPL experience.

Add Joe Cole, and a cheap holding mid to replace Masch (Silva looks the likely suspect), and we are not looking too bad.

I think then we need a LB, and that could be Drenthe, Bridge or the Mexican LB who looked good at the WC.

I've said it before, but I'd use every penny in the pot to see if we could then get Alonso back from Maureen.

                                  Reina

Johnson/Kelly    Carra/Skrtl   Richards/Agger   Drenthe/Bridge

Kuyt/Babel/Maxi   Gerrard/Lucas/Aqua   Silva/Alonso    Cole/Riera

                                  Aqua/Gerrard

                                       Torres

Subs from

Ireland
Ngog
Lucas
Skrtl
Greek
Insua
Jovanovic
Silva

Looking at that squad there are also lots of players who can play in several positions which is a massive plus, for example....

Cole  LM, RM, AM
Gerrard CM, DM, AM, RM
Aqua  CM, AM
Kuyt  RM, ST
Jovanovic  ST, LM
Richards  RB, CB

The key to our squad I think is the sale of Masch, for somewhere over £25m.  With that done I think Roy has a healthy pot to spend, and could make a siginificant difference to our first eleven and squad.

there is no way in hell Jose would be that dumb to let Xabi leave. having said that, i would like to see us buy Wayne Bridge, Joe Cole, Stephen Ireland, Micah Richards and Lee Cattermole. even if it means selling Mash to buy those 5, its a good deal as the squad would improve in all areas.

Joey Mattock could be useful on the left. Shouldn't cost more than 2Mil either.

Left back should be 2nd priority for Roy.

1st is definetly a striker. Check this out

Liverpool set to snap up Twente attacker Bryan Ruiz

Roy Hodgson is determined to kick off his Liverpool refurb with the capture of Twente hot shot Bryan Ruiz, according to the Daily Mail.

Ruiz, 24, was the catalyst for Steve McLaren's successful charge to the Dutch title after he grabbed 24 goals in his debut season.

Pis.sed myself at that comment mate.

Agree to an extent, I really don't rate Bridge these days, too many years as a sub a Chelsea really stunted his progress, he could have been a lot better than he is imo.  He was poor for Man City last season.

You probably put it a bit stronger than I would have though

Micah Richards is another good shout. He had the world at his feet a few seasons ago but he would have cost£20 mill at the time. Considering our financial position he'd be worth a shout, still got lot so of potential in my eyes, he's big, strong and quick and can play a bit and could do it at RB or CB. Not sure how much he'd cost mind? I'd guess around the £8 million mark.

Completely agree. Has to be the first spot Hodgson addresses for me. On paper we actually look OK with Carra, Agger, Skrtel and Krygiakos, decent defenders every single on of them but we don't have a good enough partnership. Our 4 centre-backs don't compliment each other

I disagree that it is imperative, decent organisation and a decent pair of full-backs would reduce the sometimes calamitous defending from last season.

Clean Sheets : 08/09 20-17 09/10
Goals Conceded : 08/09 27-35 09/10

I see where you're coming from and I don't want to downplay our inability to score goals but despite what the stats say, I'd still be looking to strengthen the middle of our defence. I also think Hangeland is that good he'd make a real difference to our back four.
