£4M is peanuts for an England international. I don't understand why he wasn't part of the Barry transfer wrangle. I heard a while back that Villa wouldn't pay £10M, but I bet they would of bought him for £6M, he could of proved a good "make-weight" part of the deal. If this deal is designed to stick two fingers up at Villa, then I wouldn't be surprised to see Villa and Arsenal agree on £12M for Barry.

 , and we were expecting 8 to 10 million

All the best carson , at least he'd get regular footie next season at a club that are sure to be relegated and than he will be sold around that price to a premier league club , mainly aston villa?  myabe?

You would hope that theres a sell on of a about 30% in the deal because they will go down and sell him for about 8 or more, but then its parry so maybe not.

Excellent point, mate.  A sell-on clause in this situation would suit us very nicely. :nod

They didn't -  cos he would have become a makeweight in the Barry deal  :D

Any player of ours they wanted ... yep yep yep 'Makeweight'  :D

This'll make O'Neil stand more firm on that so-called £18m  :help could be the longest transfer saga - no-one wants to loose face  :upside:

more money coming in but £4million is really cheap for a england squad keeper who's still only 22.

I think that both this and Guthrie's are decent amounts of money, considering they're not regular Liverpool players.

Fair comment Sabre as effectively, he wasnt a Liverpool player, he was just employed by the club.

Great bit of business and if Rafa planned this then hats off.

Personally I think he's been very lucky as Carson is a poor/average goalkeeper.

Still can't see why we have paid out for this Brazillian lad myself especially with money being so tight. I would have liked to see us sign an older hand like Niemi, Harper or Sorensen come in as back-up. Also it doesn't look so good for young David Martin now that we've signed another keeper with his best years ahead of him.

As for Carson, it's not a bad piece of business really considering we haven't paid his wages for 2 years and he cost pennies.

Maybe Rafa thinks that Reina may want to return home sooner rather than later, and wants a good quality back up for if/when Reina goes?

Yeah maybe. I just like the idea of having a seasoned pro as your back-up keeper. I know we went in for Maik Taylor a little while back and although he's not the player i had in mind I wouldn't have complained too much.

I think there are benefits and problems whichever way you play it, either way in two years time if Reina stays we will be looking for another goalkeeper. If we bought an old pro' they would be getting too old and with the youngster they will want first team football. The advantage of the old pro is they are ready willing and able to step in, while the youngster may need to gain experience, but you can then sell him for a decent profit a couple of years down the line.
