Guthrie and Lucas are the same age, and Guthrie played better in the prem last season despite having lesser talent around him. WIth lucas and mascherano playing in the olympics at the beginning I don't see why we didn't give him a chance. He could have been a useful FREE squad player and if it didn't work out his price wouldn't have dropped by january. I don't see why people think Guthrie has no potential, how many 20 year olds were starting regularly in the prem last year? It was his first year at that high of a level too, why do people think Lucas will become so much better than Guthrie?

because he's Brazilian.

He's very average, yet Lucas is something special?

Please...

Guthrie has a touch and can spot a pass, he can also influence a game. He knows how to give the ball to a player then get it back and show for the centre halves to pass to... Unlike Lucas who floats through games he can also throw in a tackle. The only thing that really lets Guthrie down is his physical attributes.

You'll see next season anyway when he's doing well for Newcastle and we have to watch Lucas trying to be Fabregas and offering absolutely :censored: all in every game he plays again.

Wrong , Lucas spots a pass a mile off , influence a game , stu did you watch the game against inter at home mate , the lad was every where , ok fair enough you don;t rate the lad , but you should''nt just forget the games he's played for us and the influence he's had . Lucas p!sses all over Guthrie i'm afraid , i'd like to see guthrie get into the Brazilian national squad . Sometimes stu , credit is due , even to players you don't rate.

Are you kidding? This the probably the exact game I'm refering to. I've never seen a player have as much of the ball in that night and do as little with it.

The amount of times he had chance to turn and get his head up and he gave it straight back to the player who passed it to him (regardless of them being under pressure or not) was beyond belief. He offers next to nothing apart from a body to pass to if you're under pressure.

He shown for the ball every time we had it (for once) but as soon as he got it done absoloutely nothing with it. Any capable Sunday league player could have done what he done for 45 minutes or so.

The lad lacks far to much confidence and ability to play in this league. His passing is at times very good, at others shocking but what worries me most is his inabiltiy to tackle and actually read the game from a defensive point of view. He also gets pushed off the ball FAR to easily which is something you can't do in this country.

As for Guthrie getting into the Brazil squad, how do you expect him to do that when he's english?

LFC2007, I saw an excellent five a side player in Lucas. I couldn't figure it out at first. Thats all he is. He's never going to be a top class premiership player. I hope I'm wrong, he's probably one player I'm not 100% sure on myself (unlike Babel, Baros and all the rest) there is something there but I'm 90% sure we'll never see him be what he could be.

Yo wazzup man?

In this you are completely mistaken.

Sa others have said; Lucas p!sses all over Guthrie any day. Lucas has brilliant passing abilities and good vision. What he is lacking is match pratctice, experience and a little bit of strenght and fitness. He is young and if you look two years ahead we will have a top class midfielder in Lucas.

In this I am 95 % certain.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

I'm not saying he's the new Fabregas, far from it, but he's got good game intelligence, vision and passing and overal ability that suggests he might go on to be a quality player. If he's to improve though, he needs to work on his physique and fitness. He's nowhere near strong enough and needs to gain a yard of pace.

As for Guthrie, I think he's very average and I don't see as much intelligence or technical ability on the ball as I do with Lucas - I think there's a fair gap in class.

If he makes it at Newcastle, good for the lad, I wouldn't want it any other way - so long as he doesn't excel against us.

In summary, I disagree with you  :rasp

:D

i think most of us would agree with you , guthrie is an average player at best .  :nod

NEWCASTLE United have completed the signing of midfielder Danny Guthrie from Liverpool.

The 21-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract at St. James' Park on Friday evening after the Magpies agreed a fee with the Reds.

Danny, signed for an undisclosed fee, told nufc.co.uk: "I'm really happy to be joining Newcastle United.

"I'm ready to get involved straight away and I cannot wait to meet the boys and get started."

Danny spent last season on loan at Bolton Wanderers and was well liked by fans at the Reebok Stadium during his time there.

United boss Kevin Keegan told nufc.co.uk: "I'm absolutely delighted that we've got Danny.

"He proved himself in the Premier League last season so we know he can play at that level.

"He's at the right age and is a good signing for us."

Shrewsbury-born Danny is Newcastle's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Argentine international Jonas Gutierrez from Real Mallorca.

Thats why stu Ill be holding my judgment on Lucas till the end of next season, he has the potential to be an excellent player for us, he just lacks self confidence to do something when he has the ball, at times he showed some great intelligence and if he can use that ability at the right positions and right time then we have a bloody good player in our hands.

I said before that I'm strongly convinced that Lucas will find that confidence, but not sure now, time will tell, maybe he won't make it in this league and he may be a better player in leagues such as Seria A or La Liga were football is more suited for him there.

Guthrie needs time and matches in his pocket, and there's little of that for him in Liverpool.

Which is not surprising because that will be the story in most top clubs when it comes to youth system.

But I hope that "undisclosed fee" is not zero, because even if they don't make it to the first team, our youth players should have some of the attributes Stu mentions on Guthrie and thus we should be able to make some money. The youth system must be useful to provide a few players for the first team, but also should be a football shop to get extra money when we fail to produce a regular player for Liverpool, that is, we should be able to produce players that are very interesting for small premier or championship teams.

With this one it can be quite difficult. I watched Guthrie against united last season and thought he was boltons best player.
He does give the pass 9 times out of 10 right and show for the return.
He crosses well with both feet as well, looks imo a very decent player, definate premiership player, and definately someone that if we kept him he could come in and do a steady job at in most midfield positions.

What i'm not convinced about is his ability to get many goals or to be a decent defensive midfielder.
Now i know Stu has said in the past that midfielders dont have to be specialised in either but not many players are like Gerrard where they are brilliant at both.
I just think Guthrie is decent at both, adequate enough cover - yes without doubt, but when thats you strongest position and he is from the youth team, if you can get 3 million ish, thats good business.

Although not if you gamble 7-8 million on Lucas.

I hope Guthrie continues to do well but dont think he will be a player that we look at in a few years and think Rafa made a mistake selling.

Blackburn manager Ince wants Pennant to fill Bentley role at Rovers

Last updated at 9:27 PM on 11th July 2008

Jermaine Pennant is in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a move that could spark Liverpool's bid for Robbie Keane.

The 25-year-old has failed to establish himself at Anfield since joining from Birmingham two years ago.

Newcastle had shown interest in the winger but Blackburn are eager to find a suitable replacement for unsettled David Bentley.

Newcastle, instead, moved to sign another Liverpool midfielder, Danny Guthrie, in a £2.5m deal.

Guthrie, 21, who spent last season on loan at Bolton, becomes Kevin Keegan's second signing of the summer.

That cash, plus the money from Pennant's expected switch and Peter Crouch's move to Portsmouth will help Liverpool's as they try to lure £20m-rated Keane from Tottenham.
