Not only have our midfielders improved and shown world class under Benitez but our defenders are starting to look better and better.

Some of his tackles were timed to perfection - and they had to be. Those long legs sliding in, he reminds me of Carlton Palmer.

World calss? Sorry to rain on your parade but get real!

Traore, especially and Biscan played very well but don't get carried away....

Traore played really well and he intercepted more than his fair share tonight. He has improved by leaps and bound this season. To be classified as world class, one has to do more than that and much more consistently. Traore still has to improve on his passing/distribution abilities and do all these consistently - defend, intercept and also pass forward progressively - before he can be called world class.

One example (I hate to say this but I have to acknowledge it based on his performances) is Rio Ferdinand. Or Allesandro Nesta.

We don't really need a world class defender, as long as ours are reliable and the defensive midfielders can cover more than adequately, and our other players can pass the opposition out of the park, we'd do quite well.

Awesome game. Brilliant last ditch tackle to save us.

There is no doubt that Traore is playing out of his skin. Hands up all the knob-jockeys who said we should have sold him for 1.5 million to the blue-noses? (err, to be honest I was just about the loudest advocate for that sale). Rafa, what a judge!
Incidently, Monaco away and Olympiacos at home are two really tricky fixtures. My feeling is that defeat in either would put us out so I'm not counting any chickens. Top effort by the lads tonight though.

Bigmick. We can lose to monaco as long as we beat Olympiakos by more than 1 goal at home.

I see you've been spending your week off in the boozer Jonny :D

Bigmick reminded me of when everybody was saying "Sell Traore". At the time I said keep him, for one reason because we'd get f*ck all for him. Glad we did keep him!

As I was also one of his biggest critics I take my hat off to you Traore, this season you have been superb, nice one! And well done Rafa for seeing something I didn't, a mark of class.
