He didn't screw up royally (i.e. like Enrique) but he didn't impress either. Even though he's out of practice, you'd still expect better playing against League 2 opposition. Having said that, even Benteke didn't impose himself, which is the biggest disappointment given his reputation and his physique

Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori to join Reading for £3.75m - source

Reading are on the brink of signing Liverpool defender Tiago Ilori on a permanent deal after a fee was agreed between the two clubs, a source has told ESPN FC.

The Championship side are close to completing a £3.75 million deal to sign the Portuguese defender, who has made just three first-team appearances for the Reds since joining from Sporting Lisbon for an initial £3.5m the summer of 2013.

The Hampstead-born player is now free to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical with Jaap Stam's side, who are making a push for promotion this season.

The source added that the deal includes a "significant" sell-on clause for Liverpool.

Ilori has only featured for Liverpool's under-23s side this season after failing to force his way into Jurgen Klopp's first-team plans.

The 23-year-old returned from a loan spell at Aston Villa last season to play for Liverpool in the FA Cup in the midst of an injury crisis, and has also had temporary spells at Granada and Bordeaux during his time at Anfield.
*************************************************************************

Seems like another "once-promising" young player gone.

Clearing the deadwood is fine and dandy but how about re-filling the squad with more promising youngsters? What is the use of buying these promising youngsters and neither developing them nor making use of them and then 2-3 years down the road we sell them?

Ilori seemed like he had real potential, very composed on the ball. If Rodgers or Klopp had used him, he would have improved much more. Instead went on useless loans where he was sitting most of the time as well. The change in managers also didn't do him any favours. Waste of talent. FSG should know to keep managers for longer periods. Otherwise all these investments on young talent don't reap any benefits as the incoming manager may not take to the player.

Just an FYI for those who missed it, the details of his transfer were made public last year as part of the football leaks thing.

Initial transfer fee

€1,880,000 upon Ilori’s registration to play Liverpool

€3,000,000 by July 2014 (note: we signed Ilori in August 2013)

Total transfer fee = €4.88m

Performance bonus:

15 Liverpool apps = €500,000

30 Liverpool apps = €500,000

45 Liverpool apps = €500,000

Total performance bonus = €1.5m

Future transfer:

Sporting receive 25% of any profit made on a future transfer

Liverpool will notify sporting of any accepted transfer bids to allow Sporting a chance to match the transfer bid

Clauses:

Liverpool shall not transfer Ilori to Benfica, Porta or Braga unless they receive an offer of €60m. If this should happen, Sporting would receive 50% of the transfer fee. (This clause expires in September 2018)

He wasn't very good. In fact, after signing him, we pretty much loaned him out ASAP.

Good riddance.

Took a while to get him out but finally gone.

Actually think hes got a good move to Reading who seem to be enjoying a good period under Stam.

You wonder how many more of his type will leave until FSG reconsider their transfer model, if they havent already.

Harsh, mate. When I did see him play he seemed pretty composed on the ball. He never got a chance to establish himself

Sometimes you sign a young player and for whatever reason(s) it just doesn't work out. He just never really got going with us and think he has had quite a few niggling injuries which haven't helped his cause and he has maybe lost his way a bit.

Think it's a bit unfair to criticise him only on 3 FA Cup games for us. In that first game at Exeter he was only just returning from injury. He also played when on loan to Granada when they beat Barca 1-0 and managed to be part of a defence that kept a clean sheet up against the likes of Messi and Neymar

Thought he looked good at the under 21 Euros in 2015. Wish the lad the best of luck at Reading and think it could be a very good move for him to work under Stam

The posts by bunglemark and Doeboy are spot on. He never got a chance to establish himself at LFC. It's really a waste of money and time if we keep doing this to talented youngsters. And here we are complaining about lack of depth in the CB department...

Well part of the issue is also the change of manager from BR to JK...
